I have an uncracked 73 3.0 cs with 87,000 miles. Runs well, last trip was 1200 miles and used 3/4 of a quart.

My question is: what oil would be best for this engine. I have seen the Castrol Classic XL 20w-50 recomended for pre-1980 engines. or would a modern oil be acceptable?

Does anyone know where the Castrol can be purchased here in the states? I have only seen it overseas.

Looking for opions.....

Thanks,

I've used 10W-40 non-synthetic in my Big Sixes, moving to 20W-50 only if there's an excessive oil consumption issue (perhaps because of extreme hot weather driving, worn valve guides, etc). Castrol can be found in any auto parts store but Wal-Mart seems the cheapest.

All the chain auto stores carry Castrol GTX here on the west coast, I use 20/50W which was recommended when new. My oil consumption is probably similar to yours.
