Exactly right. My 6 series has been through three sets of tires in 20 years (just put on the 4th set). None of them were particularly worn, but all of them had cracks of one sort or another. My last set were particularly bad, as the car had been sitting for some time, baking in the sun, Hard as rocks, and cracks in the tread grooves.
 
I got the date codes before I bought them - 46th week of 2023 so I know how old they are. You all can argue about this all you want though :D
