Is the block supplied by the factory or any shop can engrave the VIN with the X instead of + when it is replaced?
Two e9’s and an e3. Seller has a nice trifecta going. I’ll take the e3 with the automatic. Let the “e9 lynch mob” fight over the other two.

I think if you bought a complete replacement motor from BMW they would stamp the block and add the Xs. The Malaga coupe came with a replacement block and it had 530 stamped where the VIN would be so maybe a ‘short’ block?
The factory replacement block would have the Xs stamped where the + would have been and they’d either install it like that or they’d stamp the vin between the X. That wouldn’t have been stamped at the factory. Other stuff about the motor was generally stamped on the ledge under the head in the case of a complete motor.
My tii has a replacement block and it had no stamp there whatsoever, so that’s odd in this case but not unheard of from what I have learned given the way Hoffman did things.

The cars this seller lists on BaT are categorized as "Private Party Sale". However, the seller alludes to the fact that he is selling the car for "his client". Maybe I'm interpreting this wrong? If not, it seems that this should be listed by BaT as either a "Dealer Sale" or perhaps a new category called "Consignment Sale". Using Private Party Sale leads me to believe that potential buyers will be dealing with a private party owner of the car (not a dealer) and that the owner will be answering the questions and addressing the concerns. This give the potential buyers more confidence that they are getting complete and accurate information. Not the case when a vehicle is being sold on consignment.
As someone who has sold cars for others on BaT, they make a point to clarify that the titled owner is the person receiving the funds. I explained to them that once the sale is over, I’ll facilitate whatever needs to be facilitated but the buyer and the current owner will handle the payment details, etc. That’s what they wanted to hear. I guess it’s possible that Alec has a Montana LLC so the cars are in his name, which is probably on the importation documents as to import the car, you can’t do that in the name of the European owner.
I think you have a good idea, though they often put in the description that the car is being offered by the seller on behalf of the current owner. That text isn’t in the description here.

I have to admit, it is one of my (and there are a few) pet peeves on BAT. A dealer is a dealer, there are dealers on hard surface sites all over the country who only take in consignments and they have to register as dealers.
If you are taking profit out of selling cars on a regular basis, you are a car dealer. I know all states are different, I think WA may be more than five cars a year, which I think is pretty fair, less than that is fine, you may change often or you do the odd favor for a person not internet literate.
i will add, as Dick refers to above, and has been proved again and again on BAT, the dealers don't know many or sometimes any of the cars they represent and isn't that part of what BAT was about on the buyers side, being able to communicate with somebody who really knows the actual car ? Sadly, no longer, as it really has become a dealer site, if you look now there is very small percentage of true "private" sales, dare I say 80-90% either on consignment or purchased recently for resale.
As I mentioned on the current Batmobile sale, not only do the dealers selling not know about the car, but when they get even a modicum of correction on their claims, their jerk circle of dealers come on in force, again not knowing the car, but drowning out a potential informed voice on said car.
To be clear, I have no problem with people making profits, in fact I applaud it, especially if they are doing a good job or supplying a a good service.
So for fairness, i think dealers should be identified, not only when selling, but also when commenting.
Just my 1.5c on the issue, as its not worth 2c

I'm a long time BaTer...since 2011, before it was even an auction site. I've thoroughly enjoyed it almost every day for the past 12 years. A truly excellent concept and an even better execution. I have sold a few cars using BaT. The process to sell was well defined and documented. My auction specialists were always helpful and kept in constant contact with me throughout the submission process and the auction itself. BaT has been a great source of entertainment for me over the years.
I have one suggestion. There seem to be more and more consignment auctions that are identified as "Private Party" auctions. Some state in the listing "selling on behalf of the owner", but not all. Sometimes it comes out in the conversation, sometimes it remains unknown. Here are two recent examples...

If you look at other sellers that do the same thing, like 911r or even Dean_Laumbach and some of the other “associates,” they are all listed as dealers on their listings. Interesting that Alec calls himself a “professional seller” yet is private party.
Many cars are imported from overseas to sell here and are titled in the names of people who don’t own the car. Something should be done to clarify that situation as well.

Could have done better with some attention prior to putting it on the block. The faded hood, top, and deck lid would have been a deal breaker for me. Granatrot would be pretty tough to match. The color combo was a little polarizing. The seller's (dealer's?) responses were not confidence inspiring. These long wheel base E3s are beautiful, luxurious, and unique (at least in NA), but I think they have a limited audience that lusts to own one. In the US, the Bavaria is the sought after E3...maybe because that's how the E3 is remembered here. They seem to do better than even the US 3.0S or Si in spite of the fact that the S or Si is far better equipped and a better car.
I did get a response to my inquary (see post #17) from BaT. It sort of kind of explains when they use "Private Party Sale" or "Dealer Sale" but doesn't entirely make sense. I will start a new thread with their explanation. I'd like some help formulating a response.
