Can some one tell me what colour the exhaust manifolds and heat guards should be for originality ?

I did have a bit of a search but no joy

thanks in advance

Andy

Bmw Museum seems to think grey for the manifolds and black for the covers..

thoughts ?

Oh no, you've prodded the bear now.
Wait for the pile on with comments to the effect 'BMW has no idea when it comes to restoring E9s to factory spec.'
My guess is this is a display motor and not indicative of how they left the factory.
They've also painted the clutch assembly and possibly the flywheel, which isn't right.
Calling @Keshav as he should know.

The tin covers are semi gloss black the aluminum ones are left bare The manifolds new were a silvery gray cast iron color but quickly changed to the brown rusty look of cast iron in the open I have been powder coating the tin ones with the semi gloss and using a gray hi heat manifold paint from POR 15 It is a bit darker than what the cast iron looked new but is quite close, I also do the aluminum covers in that as well I have tried numerous coatings on manifolds and/or headers over the years and nothing really stays on but this stuff stays the longest and still looks pretty good

Thanks, Rick

Maybe they should have bought a valve cover from me...
and 9 other things I spotted in one minute.
its a frankenmotor.
ok- who else sees 5 things wrong with the valve cover?
nah - make that 6...

I’ll play.
1. Incorrect valve cover for carbs.
2. Hex nuts instead of silver cap nuts
3. Orphan stud on cover
4. Later style duck gasket cover
5. Cover is painted
6. No valve cover gasket

whats my score?

I second the use of por-15 grey manifold paint. It has held up well on mine and looks factory.

As I recall the motor is a 2.5L m30. The valve cover bothered me right away, it’s from a much later m30: filler on the left, flat boss near filler, another flat boss facing carbs next to it, stud on cover to mount ICV or something, nut vs. dome nuts (they did change in 74 or 75 on 2002s to nuts). Air cleaner looks nice however. ;)
