Fan clutch shim

I've been reading with interest about the addition of a shim in the friction fan clutch assembly - thank you @stphers & @eriknetherlands

My question - can this shim be flat (i'e the small rod when extended pushes up against it), or does it need to have a 10mm hole, like a washer (so the rod fits into it)

Flat, I actually use worn down dremel cutting discs You want the pin to push against flush
