Fan not properly cooling?

Don't have to change the water pump if you have the original 4 bolt one vs. the newer single screw on one. Or the radiator if its original but each car has different clearances. For mine i just got the pieces and used the same waterpump that the friction clutch attaches to.

I have a new fan, clutch and water pump to sell, but not sure it fits every application. Steve O'Neal tried to make it fit his (74' I believe) and there was a problem.

Triple core means that there are three sets or layers of tubes between the left and right radiator tanks (sides), was always my understanding. Is this not so (since no one has actually responded to the question)?

Agree that the symptoms of the OP are quite specific to a bad fan clutch.

Can't you "lock" the fan clutch so it's always engaged regardless of temp/engine speed? As a remedy?

Yes Teahead, you are right, by now I could do so, just to go on with other works. If I remember well it is enough to use a couple of longer bolts to have it engaged from the start.

I think in the next days I will do as follows

1) Test the thermostat (it will be a miracle if it is the origin of the issue :-( ). Maybe there is a way to test it without remove it? (Also to avoid to change 2 gaskets and 1 seal)

2) If the thermostat works, may I show you both my old water pump and radiator so that you could tell me if in your opinion order only new type fan and clutch could be a nice try or not?

Yes of course post pics, perhaps if you are going to change the gaskets and seals why not put a new thermostat in if your old one is f unknown date/origin (after testing it of course)?

Last question, probably a stupid one, since noone till now talked about this option: restoring a dead fan clutch isn't possible?

Years ago I had a Bavaria and did just that with a bolt through the clutch till I got a new one. It works, but makes the engine very un BMW like with all the noise at medium to high RPM.

Here I am with photos of the old water pump and the radiatore on site.

Does your new waterpump have a round pulley mounting surface (the one with the 4 holes in it)? Looks like you have room to fit the upgrade. What is the measurement between the fann blade and the top piece of the radiator (not the fins)?

Here you can see the pump actually fitted:

I think it is not the right one to do the upgrade, isn't it?
And, about the measurement I have to look at, is it the red or the green one in the drawing?

About viscous clutch, I found this one on Ebay at very good price, do you think it could be ok for the new fan?

Yes with that water pump you need the 2 pieces I linked to before but with the fan clutch with the hole in it, that one is for the screw on water pump. Red measurement.

This can get confusing. The earlier viscous clutch uses the same four bolt holes but with with an adapter with a bolt in the center. The second version is called a spin on with a very large NUT on the pump side. I think screw on and spin on get used interchangeably and they aren't.

Here I am again: the measurement between fan blade and top piece if radiator is at least 2.5 cm.

The nearest point is the low hose near radiator...I think about 1 cm
