a few ago i noticed i didn't have a fan shroud on my 2800cs. when i looked up on penskeparts, i didn't find a shroud on the 2800cs, but did find one on a 3.0cs. i looked at my radiator, and i didn't see any screw holes at the top to mount a fan shroud.

so my question is, did the 2800cs NOT come with a fan shroud? penske shows it starting at 4/71. there are multiple radiators for manual tranny coupes - for the 2800cs its 17111102866 (as well as the 3.0cs - up to 10/73). the 3.0cs is 17111121295 or 17111112367 (both starting from 10/73)
can somebody post a pic of a corner of the radiator showing the fan shroud mounting hole? i would like to have one ... but before i order one, i want to make sure i can put it on my car.

thanks in advance for any assistance.

Scott,

These may not have been available until the 74 models. My auto trans rad which is original has no mounting holes.

my radiator is NOT original as my coupe was originally a CSA as well ... and there is no auto tranny cooler in my radiator.

Fan shroud

Hi, I've a 74 cs. I was also searching for a fan shroud n found out that the e23 shroud also fitted the e9. Found one at a yard.

2800cs's didn't ship with a shroud. When I replaced my radiator last year Don was kind enough to fab me up a shroud he made from an E12.

E12 based are easy fits.

Saw a new e23 fan shroud for $31.44 including shipping from 'JustParts.com' on eBay and purchased it, as my car does not have one. THANKS for the heads up about this W. Chen.

Good advice.. Sr. Q.

Not really. Installing a fan shroud without a reason is unnecessarily lowering the bar for DQ. Who needs a shroud? We have done that for the fuel pressure topic, we did it for the Stahl headers on stock engines. We need science here.

If one puts an electric fan upstream of the radiator then a shroud after the radiator is useless. If the original fan impeller is used then one can argue that negative pressure is leaking through the sides and forcing less air through the radiator, but then again the fan clutch system is a closed loop system that tries to limit the fan revs in any case. Is this for one stuck idling in traffic? If that is the case it will be easy to instrument in the garage and measure the benefit.

I am into removing stuff, not adding. Yesterday I was swapping steering wheels and thinking how damn heavy they are. Still thinking if there is a way to eliminate the steering wheel, maybe after the shroud project.

From my trivia post, fan shrouds were added to `74 CSA coupes. Although it probably helps I think it was a response to poor cooling passages in the head which BMW didn't address until the 80s.

Bernoulli equation Is your friend ... The velocity increases through the radiator because of the shroud
