Well it’s been 35 years since the restoration, so it’s about time I put the new Karmann label plate on in the driver’s door jam.

Pretty obvious where it goes, and the Karmann chassis number is readily visible without it, but what the heck are the fasteners to be used?

As I recall, they were some sort of small nail with a fluted shank, about 1/2” long.

Here the old and the new label plates. I’ll stamp the new with the car’s current color code.

Do you know which tool is used to install these rivets?
And to remove them, do you need to drill them out with a drill bit?

Thanks and greetings!

Normally these rivets are driven in with a steel pin with a matching concave head. I'd use a hardwood dowel; it'll work just as well : it's a fastner that requires only a small force to insert.

To remove; yes drill bit. And be sure to centerpunch so not your drill doesn't wonder off and digs into the soft alu plate. And scratch things.

@eriknetherlands is correct. It takes a special tool with a matching concave head. Without those tools being available, trying to form (hammer) these rivets in place like the factory did will result in lots of damage to your plate, the rivets and the surrounding fresh paint. If you want to make it look factory correct, then glue the four rivets in place with a modest amount of glue on the back side only. Then Glue plate in place. Glue? My favorite - JB weld.

You can find punches with a concave tip that would do it no prob. I restored a vintage drill press and motor which used these rivets for the name plates and the concave punch worked fine.

I made new look alike from small finishing nails. a title hammer work on the head to shape it, roughed up enough to bite into is mounting hole, with a little glue for safe keeping.
