Picked up my coupe at Horseless Carriage in Jersey Saturday morning and trailered it back to Glen Cove, Long Island. $1350 from Plano, TX. to New Jersey and another $78 in bridge tolls and it’s finally home in one piece. In one photo you can see my 350 Super Duty & trailer I used to make the haul. I have the original wheels so the rice rocket racer wheels  will eventually go. Just glad to own a super solid car after so many years without a BMW .

The car has 2 different front bumper guards which I feel may be upside-down, can someone tell me  which is correct for a 72 car ? I’m thinking I would like the looks of the driver’s side guard if it was flipped. Also my friend seems to think the mirror is from a later car (320I ), can anyone identify it ? Thanks in advance for any input. ~ John Buchtenkirch

Congrats on the car and welcome to the madness. At first glance it looks like a nice example. Any pics of the interior, engine bay, etc? Nice color too. Good call on ditching the wheels. I might be wrong but it looks as though one of your bumperettes is a proper 73 style (the passenger side) and the other is a pre 73 that's been mounted upside down to match the other. the inverted (passenger side) piece was made for the 73 cars and was part of a few mods the US versions underwent to make them safety compliant (others included bumper spacers both front and rear to set the bumpers out from the body, side markers, and a few more that i cant recall at the moment). I have a set of 73 bumperettes if you like that look. You can find the pre 73's from a few sources as well.

I think the mirror may be correct for a 73 as well, although i think it was fitted to a few cars in the mid 70s. the older mirrors are significantly smaller and trapezoidal in shape.

Do you know the history of the car? what are the specs?

Again, welcome!

I know that car!!!

It was one of the ones I looked at (via photos) before I bought my first one. I thought it looked like a decent one at the time, but the Granatrot red one came up right around the same time (for less money) and I grabbed it. Plus I didn't want a sunroof because of the headroom issue for me (6'6" tall means sunroofs and I don't get along on these E9's)

I always wondered what this one was really like. That was about two years ago so if it was still in Texas, I am guessing he never sold it at the time.

I still have the photos of this car on my computer. It's an automatic right? With a big white shift knob and rice rocket speaker covers on the kick panels and rear package shelf?

I remember I really considered it at the time, but the sunroof and the price weren't the right combo at the time for me.

Glad to see where it ended up!

That mirror is known as a Flag mirror and is correct for a U.S. `73. The passenger bumper guard is also correct for a `73, a one year only item. The driver side is a `72 and earlier passenger guard that is flipped upside down so you have have two passenger side guards. Is it a `73? Looks good from the pics, please add it to the registry. And congratulations, you have been patient and hopefiully rewarded!

Pics of my '72 bumper and mirror. Nice car John, congrats, I've followed your hunt for one. I had a malaga 25 years ago. Now the fun really begins

Nice car. The mirror is fine, I think it was also used in other models. I think the front look improves by replacing the sealed beams with the flat Hellas (and improves the illumination).

hi congratulations

the bumper rubber is ok in the left hand side, but upside down, i don´t know the design of the passenger side bumper

the mirror is original, the same one that i have in my car (dated 1971), but not in the same position, see pics

Congratulations

Now please register that coupe at www.e9-driven.com
You can add information as you go.
This keeps a tally of the coupes in existence and will help us validate the value of our cars.

Thanks!

Under Riders

Hard to tell what is going on there with your under riders. Can't see how one could mount the rubber upside down. I would say a mis-matched set. My bumper is from a 1971 2800 CS
mounted to the '74. Hope this helps.

For sure, fat side down.

Yes I think that's the "Gumball Rally" from the mid 70's - he's in the daytona spider, and it's the "first rule of italian driving"!

Isn't the quote....as he tears off the mirror..."what is behind me does not matter!"

Yes it's not optimal, I think Hoffman's concern was that putting them in the euro position is that they are somewhat blocked by the window frames is this the case with yours?

isn´t it more uncomfortable ? the angle of vision is wider, you have to turn your head more to the left !

…unless what it is behind you now, has the intention to move frontwards:-D

a pic of the front area, the detail of the front bumper´s stops

you can find all the needed parts for replacement (at least in w&n), only problem, expensive set : metal + rubber = 300 euro each side

might be, but anyway i do prefer this position to anyother backwards possibility, I even find my actual position a little bit too rear, i would like it to be in the front wing as they were those of the 2000CS, remeber ?

Strange

My car, a '74, with trapezoid mirrors. There were electric positioning switches on the drivers door panel. I may have stupidly eliminated these. When I did the interior. Looked to me like B.S. '70's stereo crap at the time. Did I F.U. by trashing these bits? Rare stuff? One thing for sure on the coupes...save all. I do not know as to the rest, but my mirrors seem to have a mind of their own and never seem to be in proper adjustment...hence the italian method!

Caddy Green, it is the coupe you were thinking of and was formally owned by John Woodmansee. The car is a very solid 1972 with a so so repaint job. Having said that after nearly 40 years in the auto body & sheet metal trades I tend to pick apart a lot of body shop work and I have seen far worse work than is on this car. The so called “body man’s eye” is a curse, you only notice the problems on a car’s body making it hard to enjoy average cars. Over the next 3 to 5 months I expect to tweak some of the eye sores on this car and swap in a 5 speed and then drive it and enjoy it after the salt is off the roads. I have a pretty decent 95 Audi A6 wagon for my every day driver, with the automatic trans it’s a slug and not much fun to drive. I have always driven German cars since I started rebuilding wrecked bugs back in the early seventies. I have an awful lot of hours in the collision business but haven’t done any paint work in well over 20 years. I will try to get my car in the registry this coming weekend if time allows me to.

Thank you for your answers on my bumper guards and mirror, I’m sure I will have many more questions in the coming months. One that comes to mind right now, are there right side larger mirrors like mine available ? I like the larger mirror even if it’s not correct for my year car. Also I would appreciate any suggestions on parts or accessories catalogs I should get for this car. ~ John Buchtenkirch

in my humble opinion, we (because i have the same kind of mirror than you) don´t have the "larger" mirrors, but the small ones

let me explain, when i went to w&n, alexander shaw me what was supposed to be the "original" mirror (the trapezoidal one), and it was larger than mine !

probably those trapezoidal mirrors were standard in younger cars than mine

anyway, i have seen the same mirror than your´s only in ebay, and only for the driver´s side, so i think that if you want to have mirrors in both sides you will need to buy a pair of the newer ones (i.e. from walloth "only" 120 eur per mirror)

regarding parts and drawings, i can provide you with:

http://www.wallothnesch.com/
in this link you can find spare parts, but probably they will be expensive for you, considering the delivery costs, anyway you can download the pdf files of spare parts catalog, very useful to understand the assemblies and parts involved in each area of the car

in an mp i will give you more info
