First ever E9 seen in person

First E9 I saw in person was the Alexander Calder Art car in 1978 at the Carnegie Museum of Art. I was 10, I have been a BMW guy ever since.

Bought Athena, our 3.0 CSi, July of 2011. Link to the CS Registry in my signature.

These are all good stories, thanks for posting. I especially enjoyed reading about burnouts in a CS...I can only imagine how special these cars where when brand new.

The reason I began this thread is because I find hard to really appreciate a car if you were not young when it was brand new. That is not possible for me with so many cars and I believe the stories of those who lived it are critical to keeping our hobby interesting.

Cheers,

MF

My car was originally imported into Maine and had a neat vanity plate, I will try and post a pic when I get the chance. Nice coupe BTW...

I was living in Austin TX 82 through 84. I'd had the 2002 bug since I was 13, and bought my first through 6th 2002S in Austin. I'd routinely cruise neighborhoods and look down driveways for cars. While doing this, I saw the beautiful subtle curves of an E9 and was immediately irrevocably smitten. "Screw 2002s," I thought, "I want me one of THESE."

The first e9 I see will be this weekend when I finally get to lay eyes on my '71 that I purchased in January. The torture has been slowly eating at me day by day. I'll let you all know about my first time then.

I was riding my bike down PCH in Newport Beach when I was passed by what I now know was Paul Cain's 3.8. I had no idea what it was but that sight stuck with me.

I had a Bavaria in college that didn't like to go forward and tried to kill me one night after class. After that I swore off BMW's until one of my co-workers, (I sell cars), insisted that I drive a Z8 that we had taken on trade. After great protest I finally grabbed the keys and decided to give the car a chance. Am I glad I did! The car was amazing! Beautiful design, well balanced, stunning in every way, and it had a heartbeat that you could feel and manipulate with the go-pedal and the shifter! I was in love!!!

Fast forward about 3 years later, also Newport Beach. A friend of mine (FjordTempo) purchased a Coupe, Fjord with red interior, actually a nice combo. His car was very original and had just the right amount of patina. Every angle was perfect, the greenhouse was just right, and the ride was lovely. I was in love or was it lust? I decided right away that I was going to have one and on the hunt I did go!

Fjord's Coupe and my Coupe when I purchased it on 2008, and my Coupe as of 2 weeks ago.

My first experience with a Coupe is what drove me to get one 40 years later. I was 13 at the time and living in Montreal. My best friend's Dad was an engineer from the UK and a car buff.
He had a new 1972 CS in Agave Green. I had never been in a Euro car other than a Beetle and a Volvo P1800 when I was a toddler. I was completely into American muscle cars of the day and just could not understand why anyone would want a puny 3.0 litre car.

We set out for a romp down the highway very early in the morning to go to the Canadian Grand Prix weekend at Mosport (about 300 miles away). I sat in the back seat and was blown away by the whole experience. I had a good view of the speedometer and remember being riveted by the steady 110 MPH Brian was driving at for a long stretch. The motor just sounded beautiful. I have been interested in BMW's since that day.

I grew up in Connecticut and the first coupes I saw were at Lime Rock back in the early 70's when I was in High School but what I remember best is the last one I saw before I said "that's enough, I need one!"

It was 1984 and I was now living in Miami driving my 2002 and I would see coupes at the local mecahinics shop from time to time. One day there was a beautiful CSL parked in the lot so I stopped to look at it and asked my mechanic if he knew of any good ones for sale. He showed me a 72 Taiga CSI in the back of his shop that the CSL owner had started to restore a year prior but lost interest in once he got the CSL. The only thing left was the paint job.

I called the owner that day and have been driving it ever since.

In the 70s—a Polaris silver coupe parked on the street in my old neighborhood in Astoria, Queens. I remember coming home from school or just running out to play and always being drawn to that car. It was so different from everything else and immediately caught my eye. I knew I had to have one eventually; it just took thirty years!

Great response thus far, this is what makes the forum great.

I will post a pic of my coupe and one in the factory--wish I had a time machine to go along with it.

Taiga green coupe, lowered with front spoiler and black cloth interior (CSL?) while staying the summer in Long Beach as a teenager. It was parked on the same street every day and I thought it was the coolest thing on 4 wheels... still do.

In 1973 I was at boarding school and on a parents weekend in July I saw my first E9. It was owned by someones aunt and when I saw her getting out of the car I fell instantly in lust with her and love with the car. She looked like Audrey Hepburn and was a vision next to the Polaris E9, a dream image for a schoolboy.

39 years later I bought my first E9, a 1973 Polaris.

I never did get to live out any of the fantasies I had about the aunt, mores the pity. I hope she aged as well as the E9.

Do we have a winner? FTW ! Fred takes it, I am glad 'half' of your fantasy played out....women in BMW's are an interesting subject, but I find most of them are already spoken for....

Does this count? Growing up, my favorite electric slot car was a black CSL, followed by a white/green 917. I completely forgot about my old slot cars over the years.

One beautiful sunny Sunday morning, I saw an immaculate Fjord CSi being lazily piloted down Valencia in SF. I chased that car on my bicycle until they parked. I was mesmerized, staring at her for what seemed an eternity, yet something seemed eerily familiar. I decided then and there that I'd eventually purchase one for myself.

One year later, I had purchased my very own 1972 Italian import Fjord CSi. Two years later, I added a basket case Baikal parts car to help out the '72 - that was almost five years ago now.

This past Christmas, I was visiting my parents and decided to scour their basement for my old slot car track. Lo and behold, they had saved everything! I pulled out the track, then the old box of cars, and there she was - my old black CSL! I had completely forgotten about her. It was now abundantly clear why that CSi in SF had struck such a chord 30+ years later - it was like being reunited with a beautiful past flame.

As you can see, instead of a train, I set the slot car track up around the tree so we could all have a bit of nostalgic fun!

edit: My dad had a Euro M635i growing up, so that might have influenced me just a bit!

Finally got see my first e9 and drive one this weekend. Not disappointed at all. Feces eating grin for the first hour or so. It was really fun to drive. I was at the receiving end for both children so this may rate third.
