Your first symptoms equate to a bad ground, possibly the copper strip in tail light housing but there is a ground between the two as well. I would only use Phillips silver base bulbs too. Search for all the grounding screws and clean them.

Thanks, Chris. It was indeed the ground on the copper strip behind the right-side tail light. I was able to push and pull to test the strip and get the lights working normally. I then cleaned the riveted contacts and then ran some additional solder into them. Not sure that's approved technique, but it's working. Thanks for the tip!
