Does your rod flop all over the place? Do you have a hard time keeping it in the slot?

Gearbox's synchronizers might not be as happy in a "hands" of drivers liking to rest a hand of gearshift knob while driving.

Another "channel" to feel your car more (including gearbox toothed wheels and bearings), so probably good time to check the gearbox's condition prior the installation of such a kit.
 
I recently purchased this kit, along with Hal’s 5-speed platform, and can vouch for their quality.
They are both engineered very well and fabricated/finished to an extremely high level.
 
out of curiosity, what is the length of the DSSR for the o/d 5 speed?
I did a lot of measurements before settling on a length and it turned out to be 147mm, center of hole to center of hole. We are also making a short shifter to work on any vintage BMW with similar geometry to the original shifter, just a shorter throw. I'll keep everybody posted. I know this is an older thread, but is there a video anywhere on installing this kit?

Would it make sense, (while you're down there, hahah) to get the ultimate shift linkage and the short shifter? Then everything would be nice and new?

And while I'm at it would the E28 version take the rest of the sloppiness out of my shifting? (shift linkage was replaced by prior owner right before I bought the car)

I'm not sure how this would effect the slop. I think most BMW shift linkages use similar components. The knuckle that connects the selector rod to the transmission gear rod changed in the 80s but it is not any better designed than the early version. We've replaced all of those plastic bushings in the original design with oil-impregnated bronze bushings to eliminate slop and create a much longer wearing components.

Definitely, IMHO! Also, the original shifter that came with the coupes has to complete a very long movement to affect a gear change. Our short shifter more closely resembles the Z3 version which is crisp but not jarring.
 
Late to this thread, but all this talk about floppy rods, impregnated bushings, tubes of super lube, long socket extensions, and videos of firm rods in action has me wondering if maybe I mis-typed the E9Coupe URL.. o_O;)

I now regret using a teenage AI bot to write the copy for our rock-hard, constantly lubricated and always ready for action slippery shifter! Sorry!
