Patrick,

Is this your car? It's been for sale for months now. I think if you moved it over the border you would have better luck. I hate to say it, but I think the fact that the car is in Mexico is a limiting factor. Meanwhile, folks are swooning over the $60K Canadian Taiga that actually would require an import process.

Your right Markos the problem I cant register the car under my name to take it across the border because I am not a US cytizen its a very simple procedure and it only takes one day.

Patrick,

If you are serious about selling your car, this is the venue to explain the situation. The car is titled in CA but presumably unregistered? The car runs but does it drive? It has no taillights. Will the border patrol let you drive or trailer a car through without going to through customs?

How do you intend to receive payment? A smart seller wouldn't accept a money order or bank check. I smart buyer wouldn't carry $16K cash in Mexicali. Can you personally cross the border to complete the sale? Can you stay in the US and hold the car with deposit while the buyer attempts to register the car? It is a risk to you as a seller, but you are taking on the burden which makes the car more sales worthy. You might even be able to use a pawn shop as a consignment broker.

Can you provide details on the salvage title? Can you post pictures of the entire car, with details of known problem areas.

People are interested in this car, but they think it is a scam. You have a few hurdles to overcome. Transparency will help...

Patrick - this is good advice from Markos ...

Marko

If somebody looks at the car and is interested we would go back to Calexico start registration under the buyers name get a permit (one working day) I would put a car on a tariler and take it to Calexico and once there I would get paid ,if somebody wants to come down to see the car I would gladly pick them up in Calexico and take them to see the car at my home (10 min.drive).

Johnny Cash "One Piece at a Time" keeps popping into my head on this one.

Great song! Let's give Patrick the benefit of the doubt. It sounds like he has a plan. He can go to BAT of he wants to be lambasted by way of user comments from uninterested parties.

having spent decades visiting and working in Latin America......

This is a world where "no problema" often is followed by "Manana"

Judges and Wardens and police are bought off and their law is not our law.

Anybody living in San Luis or Mexicali or Tecate or Tijuana should know many people with US citizenship that can title a car in California so it can be brought over the border first.

Trailering a car across the border with new temporary reg is a sure road to secondary inspection and possible impoundment.
The car just as easily could be spotted by local cops or Federales and be detained.

The car should be registered in California, aged for a few months and driven across by the registered California owner with California plates.

Keep in mind that EVERY car driven into Mexico has it's license plate scanned by an optical character reader and the date and plate is in a data base available to the Federal Govt.
This has been going on for 20 years. Is the original plate available? If so I could check its status with the DOJ if provided.
Getting noticed and documented by customs will cause issues for years by frequent travelers.
Be very careful folks....

Some additional context Patrick - according to E9Coupe.com records. It looks like you've had the car for sale over a year now. Food for thought - given the salvage title and 12 month lack of interest, I really think you need to start dropping the price. Cars in similar condition with a clean title and no baggage have sold for $12K in the past several months. Either that, or follow-through on the CA registration per Don's recommendation.

NMNA. I have been emailing with the owner. The car is actually sitting in Mexicali (Mexico). He said he would bring it across the border to Calexico (California) to show any prospective buyers. The car originally came from the State of Washington and has been sitting in a Mexican warehouse since 2005. The owner does not have the pink slip. Can you transfer ownership in the State of California without a pink slip or any registration papers? I have no idea. Maybe some of you know the rules of the California DMV? There's no set asking price for the vehicle. The owner said "make me a good offer and you can buy my car." Seems a bit weird to me...

I spoke to the owner yesterday. He said he is going to register the car in California and then sell it. Everyone who has contacted him is asking the same question - How do we know this car isn't stolen? Based on our conversation, I do believe this will be a legitimate sale...

Just received an official Vehicle Registration Certificate from the State of Washington. Previous owner's incidentals are on this document. Dated 10/23/2003. VIN # 2240572. This car was registered on the CS Registry site on 4/30/14. Very recent. What's my next step? Contact DMV in Washington? Contact previous owner? Contact Police Department? Run like hell?
