Forum member’s e3 live on BaT

Thanks, Scott.

The BaT high E3 is a 72 Bavaria at $64,500. I think that was a combination of a very nice, original 14,000 mile car and the timing of coming out of COVID when car guys were itchin' to spend some money. Close behind was Shane's beautifully modified one. Mine will not come close to these.

Very strange bidding on mine by roofsforcars. Big bids early. I think that might have the effect of scaring off other bidders when the "real" bidding starts 10 minutes before ending. In fact, it could already be the hammer price. 6,000 views and 700 "watching" is good, and lots of conversation but most of it is just "back in the day" stories. I think finding real bidders is tough with the current economic uncertainty.

IDK Dick, I think yours will do much better than you think. There is always a big lull on the middle days of the auction. It can be nerve racking for sure. Thanks for the props. I was pretty open about this, even at the price my Bavaria sold for, I maybe broke even or made a little money on it. That's when I said, "I will never add up all my receipts ever again." I also wasn't able to do a lot of the heavy lifting like you did. I had to rely on others. So, that can add up quick. Really no cost difference in restoring a coupe. Few things here and there, but overall kind of negligible. Parts just as hard to find, etc.

But like you, the hunt for parts, camaraderie with the CCA members, friends from SoCal I met along the way, drives, shows, targas, people here, you can't put a price on that.

Keep in mind I also had to pay a hefty fee to Avant-Garde (911r) and spent even more money with them fixing some last minute stuff, photographer, etc. All adds up.

Edit: I also liked HBChris's comment to have both in the stable. That would be a dream to have your car parked next to the coupe.

Post a new picture of your car on BAT each day and BAT sends a text/email to all your watching each time. Roofsforcars has won quite a few cars…

Back then, BMW wasn't too concerned about "model year". They introduced changes pretty much on the fly instead of saving them up for the next model year like US manufacturers did. That chrome ring is for the Klippan seat belts. They were the originals on mine. They are a little fussy to adjust, but add a fairly unique touch of originality. The body colored back panel didn't last too long. It is pictured in the 1972 showroom brochure but I don't know if I've ever seen another in person. I also have the silver dash instead of the more common wood grain.

Dick,

My father bought a Bavaria new in April of 1972 (3102336), and it had the new style seatbelts and a painted rear panel fwiw.

Definitely keep the content coming like that! I posted new content each day, sometimes more than once a day, when I sold my daughter's almost 20 year owned and loved E46 ZHP sedan in 2023 on CarsandBids. I posted a couple of additional videos also including one of a very spirited drive the morning of the auction end. They seemed to be well received.

Thanks for the info on your father's Bav. A good example of "running changes".

I was probably too thorough on my submission of the car. BaT cut it back some which left me a few openings. I've got a couple more to go. I think there is a fine line between getting all the info out and over selling. I might be more sensitive to the over selling part. It really turns me off. I do count on serious buyers to ask leading questions that I can turn into more info. However, the current high bidder, and the bidder throughout the auction has not said a peep. He's bought other cars that way so what the heck do I know?

Wait, was I overselling your car? Haha.

I actually think third party endorsements of car and (especially) seller help.
I'm all for 3rd party endorsements both as a buyer and a seller. I appreciate very much those posted by you and others. Thank you!

What bugs me some are sellers that are trying too hard and "over sell" their offerings. Making comments full of superlatives. Dodging tough questions. I didn't think we were talking about 3rd party endorsements.

I definitely agree with avoiding the over selling feeling. I guess in my case I've been more interested in trying to express my enthusiasm and experience with a car while at the same time focusing on ensuring any potential buyer knows all that I know about it whether it's something positive or negative.

Similar to what you're experiencing, both times I sold cars at auction (E39 M5 on BaT in 2018 and the ZHP on C&B), the winning bidder made no comments or asked anything directly.

I agree with you. I knew you were talking about sellers. Just kidding around bit (making fun of myself, really).

Car is doing very well. Not sure of your expectations, but I think you should be pleased. Should be an interesting finish!

I’m not sure the big bids will scare others away. I think it might make people think they are missing out. FOMO.

with 17 hours to go, a new bidder enters and we are at 47.5k ... now we are talking. if we see the usual last 10 minute bump, the record could well be in jeopardy ... and i think we all know that it should be. here's hoping your hard work is highly rewarded Dick!

Thanks Scott and everyone else here on the forum. Not only for your interest and help with the sale, but for your help throughout the build of the car. You guys made it much easier and much more fun to restore this car than if there was not an e9coupe.com full of friendly and knowledgable members eager to help. This is a special group of enthusiasts and I am proud to be a part of it.

so Dick, inquiring minds want to know ... what's next?
I don't know. I'm 77 and have to think hard about taking on another major project. It isn't as much fun crawling under cars as it was even a few years ago. Well see. My first daily driver BMW was an e28 (528e with 5 speed). I think that was my favorite BMW (including the Bavaria). Maybe a nice one of those that doesn't need major work. I still have my aluminum Rover V8 powered MGB with a T5 and my 1966 Honda Scrambler CL77. Maybe that's enough for a while?

I understand your situation. I'm 76 and agree that crawling under cars, or spending hours in the garage, isn't as much fun as it used to be. I have downsized my vintage car collection to three: two 60's era Alfas and the E9.

Your ability to make rational decisions is admirable - I had the pleasure of seeing your Bavaria at Legends of the Autobahn a few years ago - and if I had built it, I would have had a hard time letting it go.

is the CL77 a 305? that's what the shape of the gas tank looks like. when i was a kid, my next door neighbor had one. really nice looking bike! the MGB is a nice light car and with the V8 its gotta move quickly. so what did you do to the brakes or suspension? the B looks great, is that primrose yellow?
