I can see that along with the e9's many people on the forum also own Porsches; I have an '86 911 Targa Carrera that has very sloppy shifting and while my "true love" is being painted I thought I would tackle the shifter issue in the Porsche. Can anyone suggest a forum that is close to the caliber of this one but for Porsches?

Thanks!

Peter-

Check out the forums at Pelicanparts.com, I think that's the largest group of DIY'ers related to the earlier air cooled 911's. Rennlist is good but seems to have more for the newer cars, and the early 911S Registry is very good for restoration details on the pre '73 911's.

IMO, there is a lot of aftermarket shifter stuff-fancy shifters, short shifts, couplers, but most issues are driven by sloppy bushings, lack of lubrication and poor adjustment. Go through each stock component and adjust or replace it before you consider changing anything.

+1...

Pelican for your 86'... fresh bushings and proper adjustment makes a huge difference.

There is a coupling (that gets sloppy with age) that connects the gearbox to the shifter shaft at the very back of the interior, it’s under a screwed down sheet metal plate and pretty easy to change out as I remember. What I can’t remember (it’s been a long time) is if you have to remove the back seats or just the carpet covering the tunnel to get to the plate. It’s very easy to be 1 or 2 splines off when installing so just test your shift pattern before putting your tools away. ~ John Buchtenkirch

Awesome

That was great, I used all your info and am on my way to smooth shifting! (Pretty sure). Pelican has some awesome diagrams and 22.00 for the bushings is easy. John, if the bushings don't clear it up completely or if it looks too worn, I'll order the coupling- Thanks! Sorry to "adulterate" the site :-)

That's ok, I secretly want one of those era 911's
