I had a 2002 for many years... I sold the car several years ago. (Not one of my brighter automotive moments).
I had the engine rebuilt (mid 1980's).
Even though I didn't ask for it - they installed a foam hood shield (custom) for me.
I had it on the car till the say I sold it (28 years later).
It was a closed cell foam but with an aluminum facing that would act as a barrier to whatever the engine threw up at it.
One time I forgot to place the oil filler cap on the valve cover after an oil change.
I found the cap on the workbench a few days later.
When I opened the hood, all I had to do was wipe off the oil that had been sprayed up from the opening. Couldn't tell anything had ever happened otherwise.
If it was bare foam (closed cell or not) - it would not have been as clean.
See pic below of what the 2002 looked like.
The surface was not always as wrinkly as it looks here (this is one of the pics from when I sold the car).
Considering it was installed for near 25 years earlier, I was happy.
Just want to offer this style of foam as an alternative to the 'stock' foam.
I talked to
@sfdon about this for my car - but we never found a suitable foam for my Coupe like this, so he installed the foam mentioned in the original post.
