Is it easier to attach the longitudinal brackets to the car first or attach them to the bumper first?

On a 73 you have to do the bumper first, on earlier coupes it depends if you can get your hand behind the bumper or not.

It seems like it would be very difficult to get to the nut that holds the bracket to the bumper if the bracket was attached to the car first
On the other hand, if you tighten the bracket to the bumper first you are setting the width between the brackets, might not match the car, I suppose measure carefully

Keep the bumper irons a little loose on the bumper.

I recently removed the front bumper from a CS alledged to be a '73.
I found it simple to reach underneath with the ratchet and take off the two bolt per side, suggesting to loosely assemble the bumper and brackets off the car, slide in place and bolt 'er up.
Of course, removal is always simpler than assembly, no matter what the manuals say "Assembly is the reverse of removal".
You'll want to do this on grass or with a drop cloth to avoid scratching the chrome. An extra pair of hands will help with the cumbersomality of the beast.

put socks on the ends to avoid scratching the paint on removal and replacement
The earlier coupes use carriage bolts on the frame so wiggling of the bumper iron is essential. The 73 has bolts through the frame itself.
