Front fender cavity cover

Have you E9 experts seen the front fender cavity covers? I found these from my car, on both sides. When I've learnt these cars by going through pictures here and even more in BaT, I've not noticed these.
I attach here picture from my car with the cavity cover and as a reference a picture from a car currently in BaT without the cover (though seems to from the opposite side of the car). Does anyone know if these covers have been delivered with cars from the Karmann factory?

Someone added these to block water and dirt from entering. The downside is they can trap moisture, potentially causing more damage than just cleaning them, cavity waxing, and allowing dry air to flow through. I clean out mine at least twice a year.
