Is there a special tool for removing the 27mm top nut while at the same time holding the top of the strut? Both are recessed down inside the top bearing.

Perhaps weld a "handle" onto the side of a 27mm socket so the inner struct end sticks out enough to hold with a wrench? or am I missing something obvious?

Thanks in advance.

This is probably the tool that you're looking for. ebay---$29.50

I may need that tool as well, but I think it is for removing the collar nut at the top of the strut case. There are four notches in the collar nut that the four pins fit into.

An impact gun is ideal for this....zaps it right off.

I have seen those specialty tools for FWD VW's, but I haven't seen one for an E9. I think this is what you mean-http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1624489

You'll need to compress the spring before loosening the nut as well.

Great - thanks for the tip. The Stahlwille looks like the best off-the-shelf item in that size.
