Fuel Pump & Battery Drain Issues

Hi Rob, is your car running D-Jet or L-Jetronic. I can't remember what feeds the fuel pump relay on D-Jet and I don't have my blue books at home but on L-Jet it is the combo relay in the engine bay, it needs a signal from the air flow meter to switch on the fuel pump. This is a safety measure incase the the engine stalls after an accident. The scenario being that you don't want the fuel pump running with a ruptured fuel line.
Normally when you switch on the ignition the pump runs for a second and then switches off till the engine starts and it sounds like yours isn't getting a signal to tell it the engine is running.

Seems to me that Gary is spot on - whatever safety device is on the car must be up the creek.

gazzol, I think it's D-Jet. The relay is behind the drivers seat under the passenger. Normally you hear the pump whir in to life when you switch the ignition on and then start up. Now, when I start up, there's no sound from the pump though the engine turns over cleanly enough.

Christopher, yeah I tried looking around for a bad earth and haven't found anything as yet, certainly not in the boot. The fact that the engine just cut out mid drive, whilst all the electrics were still there makes me think that the pump itself has died a death

Rob there are two relays attached to the Manifold pressure sensor in the engine bay that are also related to the pump i think. I remember changin one years ago to solve a pump problem.

I have a couple spare if you want to borrow to try. I am at junction 18 of the m25 - watford.

If the pump worked recently on changing the relay i doubt its a bad pump.

Regards,

Rohan

Thanks Rohan. Are they the two by the battery? The RAC guy checked those over and they seemed to be fine at the time. Having said that I'll check 'em over again - just to clean up the contacts if nothing else. Thanks for the offer - I'm a bit of a way away from the M25, but if I'm passing any time soon I might well take you up on it.
