which side does the brn and yellow wire go to on the sender
if the ground is at top.
also anyone know the resistance values of the sender

I rebuilt mine from someone on the web - not this forum - who had documented his exploits.

From his article - which is for a Bav but has the same part as ours I think......

"The repair manual says the resistance between the G terminal and minus should measure 3.2 & 73.7 ohms at the extreme positions of the float. I measured 3.4 and 84.7 ohms so at least my repair sorta worked"

I don't know whether mine works or not. I also don't know which way round the wiring goes. I was going to use the trial and error approach.

Hi Aearch,
I had this layout (see pic), which i believe is Original (3.0 CS 1973, carbed, Euro version). So it matches your own answer to your own question.
Top is ground; brown.
Left is then marked 'Br/Z' = Brown with black stripe. Brown (+the yellow ? ...it's a bit faded) is right.

My internal resistance wires are broken as well.
Arent't new fuel sender units for sale (BMW or W&N)?
Erik.

Glad yours is now functional again Alan.

Thanks Ohmess.
Did you find it at aBmw dealer or W&N? What I see depicted on the W&N website however doesnt match thr above thing. And for the partnumbers I am confused as different lenght versions exist, but my dealer cant identify the right one...
Would you happen to recall a rough price?

Erik.

The sender is just two resistance wires with a float bridging them, shouldn't matter which way current runs through it. OTOH, some must have it correct or alles ist veloren.

Also, the Bavaria sender (I'm told) is not the same as for a coupe; the depth of the tube is different. A 2002 sender would fit took, but again, the lengths are different. I think I have a couple spares, good for nothing now that 2002s are getting scarce and Bavarias even more so.

Hans, Fritz and Gerda could have made this so much easier rather than playing games with us.

no not true
the wire setup is critical
as the blk/brn wire is the low level light and must be hooked up to the + side
and the brown/yel goes to the guage on the "g" side or else it wont work
