I've read the FAQ on dash removal, but can't find specific info on just removing the vinyl-covered hood surrounding the gauge pod. Is this do-able without taking everything apart?

No - be careful! The dash must come out. The gauge hood is held in place by two screws accessible only from the rear of the main panel when it is out of the car.

on the right hand drive one of the nuts that secures the binacle is particularly hard to tighten up also. I imagine it would be the same on a LHD car.
Got the classic cars mag today. great write up for the cars. That is the csl which was at auction recently.
