Hi guys
My 4 speed getrag has the clutch pivot attached to the front plate of the gearbox.
My 5 speed does not .
Does anyone know if I can take the front cover off of the 4 speed and bolt it onto the 5 speed box.
The clutch pivot pin goes out through a hole in the bell housing.
My bell housing is the one off of the 4 speed box.

yes,
but you will find that you need also to reproduce a hole in the gearbox wall

I have a set of seals for the 5 speed, so I will probably know more when I start disassembling it .
Thanks

As I know, you need the late bellhouse with the inner clutch fork for the 5 speed.

Hi
Thanks for the offer.
I might yet take you up on it , but before I do.
Myself and a friend of mine are trying to come up with a way of machining down the 4 speed cover so that it will fit the 5 speed.
That way all of the bellhousing and clutch parts should then swap straight over.
He works on a lathe for a living .
He’s away on hols at the moment so once he comes back. I’ll know if machining it is a realistic option or not.
The 4 speed front plate has a set of smaller diameters and the depth of the bored out shoulders are approximately 1mm different also.
So in theory the 4 speed plate would have to be bored out to take the 5 speed radial seal sleeve / tube.
Then a semi circular “pocket “ would also need to be machined to take the small circular disc , that disc seems to be a form of anti-rotation key .
In theory this is all possible, but it’s a bit tricky to hold in the lathe as it’s aluminium, so it might work or it might fly out of the chuck and then , I’ll definitely need a bellhousing.
I’ll know more soon, hopefully.:)

Hi guys
The plan worked out, my friend machined the front plate from the 4 speed getrag so that it could fit onto the 5 speed, so I managed to re use my existing bellhousing and I used the Hal Boyle shift mount. So I now have a pre sept 1973 clutch system which matches the year of manufacture of my car , and I have a late 1970’s / early eighties 5 speed gearbox all working together.
I fitted the speedo drive from my 4 speed and replaced all oil seals.
While I was at it , I also modified my 4 speed gearstick to make it a quick shift item . So I am happy out now that it’s almost ready for going back into the car.
