My 1972 '02 has a sunroof, not a big deal. But... this sunroof has a little aluminum pop up deflector. Apparently, this is one of the rarest options you could get on an '02. My coupe has just about every option available in 1972 but it's sunroof doesn't have one.

Do any of you have one of these as part the sunroof in your coupe? Was it even an option on an E9?

I'm thinking about pulling off the '02 and installing it on my coupe.

They were a European option, from what I understand, on '02s. I have one on Vern, found on Ebay for $100. I refer to it as a 'wind noise generator'.

One just sold on the '02 forum, listed for $300. to a guy who had been looking for months. Also found on Porsches and Volvos, so depending where you are, there may be one on a parts car. Pelican Parts has springs, one side, and the middle for about $600.

I'd leave it on the'02 and advertise you want and keep on the look out for another. They are so simple you could also find a machine shop to fabricate one, or gauge interest in a 'group buy', making the the hinged clips would be the hardest part.

Probably one of the rarest of all E9 parts. Have heard that the early Porsche 911 Golde deflector is an exact fit.

I have one on my E9... I will send photos if interested... I don't know what the sound and airflow is like without it but I will say that at 100mph with the sunroof open there is no buffeting and the noise is better than when I open the roof on my 2010 535 E61.

sunroof wind deflector

Once upon a time I had a 1971 Euro 2800 CS that was fitted with the "pop up" deflector on its Golde sunroof.

In 1985 car went to a new owner from Northern California who lived around Fort Bragg as I recall--no idea of its whereabouts now and doubt its survival--as that is a very wet coastal climate.

It's the red screwdriver for sunroof owners - because it's rare and you know you want one

I saw one on an ExecMalibu car and immediately wanted one. Then he told me that "it is cool to look at but creates a lot of wind noise" so maybe if it can be kept down and only deployed when the car is being shown.....maybe

I don't hear the wind noise over the sound of the webers at full noise ;-)

Stan come to Boston and lets go for a cruise with the roof open, you decide

So how rare are the rear window shades? Dealer installed I believe. Saw them for the first time years ago on a friend's coupe and wanted them ever since. Once you see them you want them. Like the sunroof wind noise maker. You know in your heart you do.

So the question is... If it is the "open top noise generator" why would I want one?

Looks a lot cooler than the smoke plexiglass type and 'invisible'.

Bet it's quieter on a coupe, more windshield rake, the sunroof is further back and about half the depth of the '02.

On Vern, it does help divert air over the open sunroof, instead of gale force deep bass parachute wind, there's a little breeze and a higher pitch shhhhh. Really quiet over 70.

The sunroof deflector on my 88 M6 really cuts down wind noise. When I manually press down on the flap with my fingers, that inturns creates a lot of wind turbulence and noise that buffet the interior cabin.

The BMW deflector is exactly the same as a Porsche 911...

They are all Golde Sunroofs. The deflector from a pre 1982 Porsche 911 fits perfectly. The deflector fits exactly in the same spot and all of the screw holes line up perfectly... They come in three parts. Only use the two side bottom pieces on the Crank (Manual) sunroofs though.

The only problem I have noticed is the one from a Porsche is much noisier up then down... I am not sure if the Porsche deflector is different then the BMW. Maybe they are each shaped slightly differently but I do not think so.

Also the dark smoked plastic deflector was also a factory option on E9s and those are around!

The plastic deflectors weren't factory, dealer installed aftermarket I believe. They aren't on any factory accessory pamphlet that I have seen. I could be wrong though.
