Grille slats

Side grills are black, center grills are silver until '74. Center grill really depends on owner preference. My center is silver but I put elecrtical tape over the slats to make them black. Did that when I bought the car in 2011.
On '02s very early 1600-2s have all silver grills with 10 slat centers. in 1968 BMW changed the 2002 grills to have two silver slats and black centers to distinguish it from the 1602. Then changed to black plastic sides attached to a wider black center in 1974. If I'm mistaken about the grills please correct me.

There seems to be no pattern for which cars got silver and which black.
I have seen the same year and color car in either.
The center kidney grill slats are silver except in CSL (I think) but many, like Andrew, Chris (SkiCoach) and I have painted them black.

my ( original ) '74 csi has black metal slats in the kidney grille . It was my understanding that earlier models were silver . Number of slats varied too .Mine has ( from memory , four on each side ) whereas others have five ...but I could be wrong ( as my wife often points out! )

Yes but I think Andrew and the OP are referring to the headlight housing grills to the left and right sides of the center grill which are black.
I believe the CSL's got the annodized black 5 slat grill, the CS's got silver 5 slat grills, then in 74 it changed to 4 slat grills.
Real black 5 slat grills are very rare, I disassembled the slats from my silver one and also painted them black.

Haha, the car for sure.
Hood vent and fender side grills can be black or chrome, I've seen Fjord cars with chrome and Fjord cars with black. Athena's are black, which I prefer. Darker cars tend to have chrome.
I don't win any points for reading comprehension. I was iteration off of the "side grill" comment in the first response. Oops!
