Sorry I have posted this in the wrong location! Guibo frustration!

I realise I have posted this in the wrong location but can't work out how to repost to the correct section so my apologies.

Good morning all. I completed the 5 speed conversion on my E9 a while ago and the guibo was on its way out so I decided recently to replace it. I ordered the M5 guibo as suggested (part # 314 261 11010). It was thicker than the old one however it fitted really well depth wise. What's the issue you might ask?

Well the holes are further apart so when I installed the bolts it was a very tight squeeze. In fact I had to 'flex' the disk to get the bolts in. Once installed the guibo was very 'flexed'.

1. Is this normal?
2. Do I have the correct Guibo

I have attached photos of guibo's. Any advice would be appreciated.

Is that the correct part number? I used

Yes. That's the same as my damaged one. I ordered the new one as it was supposedly better. Any way a bit of an update. I removed the guibo and bolted it to the transmission first and then to the driveshaft. In doing so I noticed that when I turned the shaft the bottom flexed out a lot more than the top Indicating that they are not square and I suspect that's why the old one started to fatigue and why the new one appears warped.

Not sure why it's not aligned correctly or how to rectify it. To top it off the centre bearing is sitting at the very edge of the mount.

Any advice?

The part number I posted is the M5 one. Your new one is the original donut style. Either way, your alignment is the problem.

You'll need to check your engine and transmisson mounts for integrity and also your positioning of the CSB mount. One or both can affect the mating of the DS flange to the guibo.

Ultimately what you want to do is bolt up but not tighten the flange to the guibo, leaving a 1/8" gap or so. Then turn the DS while noting where it loosens and tightens (either at the top to bottom or side to side or both). Then you need to adjust the csb accordingly, if it won't move enough to get the two sides even then you'll need to adjust the transmission/engine alignment with shims at tranny or alter the CSB bracket to fit. Here is some more info on that from a 2002FAQ post by Rob Siegel:

I ended up with a couple shims on the tranny mount and altering my CSB bracket so it could be adjusted side to side a touch more, and added some washers to lower it a little. This was for my 5 speed install.

Doesn't appear to be a valid Bmw part number
Parts starting with 31 are found in the front axle section.

Great advice. I added some shims to the transmission mount. This helped however I had to lower the CSB beyond the current mounts by about an inch so I fabricated a couple of brackets. That solved the problem. Once again a great forum. I could not have got this far without advice such as this.

Hi there

I just installed my Getrag 265 5 spd into my 'automatic' E3. I followed all the great advise available through this forum.

For reference, I used Autosolutions tranny mount and short shift kit. The guibo I used was for the M5, new BMW centre bearing for the E3 auto, all new mounts, and I had my auto driveshaft modified (front half) to fit with new U-joints.

To ensure the driveshaft was aligned (vertical + horizontal) to the rear face of the quibo, I tightened the guibo to the tranny's output flange and held the driveshaft in place with the remaining 3 bolts and the pilot bearing on that end of the driveshaft. The distance between the guibo and the driveshaft's flanges was 1 mm at the bottom of the rotation and as I rotated the driveshaft I had 0 mm between the flange and the guibo (quibo was not flexing/being pushed) when a flanges were at the top of the rotating driveshaft. Considering others had to adjust things 1/2 to 1/3 inches to get alignment, I think my tolerance of 1mm (1/25 inch) is totally acceptable. The centre bearing sits nicely in its bolt slots so I preloaded it 2 mm following Haynes and tightened.

I wonder if those cars that need so much adjustment/shims when converting over to a Getrag 265/5 tranny have serious chassis issues from undisclosed accidents or hitting curbs?

I can take and post some pics, if wanted?

All the best,
Bill
