Hat shelf question?

Hi Guys,

Not sure if this is the correct translation, the part behind the rear seats is it referred to as hat shelf? Hope it is for my question.

What was the original material of this shelf? Skai or same material as the carpet sets?

I refer to that as the rear parcel shelf. 1/8 inch fiber board or plywood covered with vinyl..

When you order complete carpets sets they sometimes include a piece for the parcel shelf but my original was the same black vinyl that is on the inside of the rear C pillar.

My shelf on my 74 euro CS is carpet. Are there years where carpet is correct and other years where vinyl is correct, or does it depend on what Hans and Franz pulled off the shelf that day?

Hard to tell what previous owners have done over the years. I am under the belief vinyl is correct.

All coupes were vinyl until 74 when they all got carpet.

There is also a very thin layer of foam used on top of the plywood shelf when covered with vinyl. I assume this was not used for the carpet versions.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the input. The Csi I sold last year had carpet but that probably was a part of the new interior carpet set that was installed. The Cs still with its original carpets has new vinyl. When looking at the picture of the car before the restoration I also see vinyl with huge speakers (now gone) installed. So reading that vinyl is correct I can sleep tight again.

I recovered mine this year with speaker cloth. Very inexpensive, simple, looks clean, can be replaced easily, but looks good compared to the faded material that was there before.

Back in the early 70s people actually wore slacks, sport jackets, dresses, hats, gloves(well they were fading fast) and bell bottoms. It was different world. And let us not forget the floating dog's heads on the hat shelf, nodding yes and no.

I've already procured a hula girl for my car as it lived on two Hawaiian islands before I brought it with me to Austin. Next, a period correct license plate frame.

Hi' Just some input on the hat shelf mateial. I had a 2000CS that also had vinyl with 2 1/4 x 3 1/2 inch diamond embossed in the vinyl. I have search bfor yaers and can not find the exact vinyl. A member a couple of years ago had posted that he had found some ,however I lost his info. If anyone can nhelp me with any one has any info. on this matter it will be greatly appreciated.
