My Head Light Flasher & Dip Switch (the stalk that mounts on the left of the steering column) broke off and now the headlights won't go on. I've fiddled around with it, and am pretty sure the problem is the broken switch.

Are these switches available now (for less than a king's ransom)?

They weren't cheap when I broke mine. Good part is it feels tight and crisp, and will last another 40 years.

At the same time I ended up replacing the horn ring carbon contact (I forget the exact name) as the old one did not survive the other repair.

Same idFell off in my hand

Had the coupe valet'd in the City last week. Guys accidently turned on the windshield wipers and in attempting to turn them off broke off the headlight dimmer arm.

Haven't pulled apart the steering column yet.

Haven't pulled apart the steering column yet. Assuming it is a pressure fit in the switch and fatigued and will need replacement. Are the switches available? And if so where???

It's the white plastic plug with 5 wires going in (brown, green, white and 2 yellow) in the foregroung.

Yes, I think you remove the steering wheel and the bottom cover of the steering column.
It was all pretty easy except that if you replace the horn contact the original one is riveted.

I hate rivets, when will politicians deal with rivet gun control.
I do have the classic "Rosie the Riveter" in my kitchen though...

I have the bottom cover off, but haven't tried to remove the steering wheel yet. Could you tell me your source for the new switch? And was it for a 2800 CS (I think the 3.0 CS may have a different switch assembly)?

It may have been Carl Nelson, the horn contact I definitely bought from Carl.
Yes, make sure you have the right part #, mine is a 3.0CS 72, the setup where the turn signal is on the right and the headlight on the left moving up and down.

Steering wheel is just a nut behind the hub.
 
I "hotwired" the old switch

I don't have a replacement switch yet, but I just took the old one apart and "hotwired" it. The headlights work now and, by attaching an old light switch (from my house), I can now switch the high beams on. The wiring is pretty simple.

Now I have time to shop around for a replacement ... if one is even available.

Word to the wise: the moving parts of those switches are made of plastic, which dries out and gets brittle with age. So be gentle with your high-beam and turn-signal switches, fellow e9 owners!

I also have a 3.0CS 72, in addition to the 2800CS 70 I'm posting about. They are pretty similar, though the wiring for their turn-signal/wiper switches is a bit different. The same may be true for the high-beam switches, but I have researched that fully.

these thoughts of yours made me cry...
rivets ! i love rivets ! they are so efficient, clean, and ...sexy !
just the right diameter for the hole, and you are done !
you can even dissasemble them if there is a strong need
you will never break a thread when trying to press the two parts together too much, the rivet itself will do it for you so efficiently
put a bunch of rivets in your every day "apfel" life !
