The 2 headlight access cover plates under the hood have ab X pressed into each, should the impression face up or down?

Hi Doug, Upwards so the indent is on the underside.

I believe that the pressed in large X is for panel strength and rigidity.
I also believe that the indent needs to be upwards so no accumulation of water.
Plus, after looking, mine are upward.

And don't forget the ruberr seal that goes between the surfaces that make contact--metal to metal must be avoided

My Jan. 11th, 1969 car does not have these covers (no, they haven´t been lost along the way. There are no holes and nuts underneat to secure the hand turned screws).
