Heater Blower - Wire Routing?

Hi there...

Quickly working to complete our '71 CS restoration before Monterey. Curious how the heater blower wiring routes? It comes off the fan in the upper cowling area near wiper assembly but then where is it supposed to go? Through a grommet and down under dash? Or, does it go through the square opening with the heater console/unit itself?

Rh side in a vertical piece of the firewall. The box has a bar with three screws that hold the whole assembly on the firewall. There a hole and a grommet.
