Heater Core and A/C

I am never doing this again as long as I live! The mounting plate underneath has to be removed to slide it out. Putting it back in is going to be fun, don't know how I will get the two nuts back on driver side of heater to firewall.

Maybe tape them to a flexible spring drive socket. Just a guess on what you are up against.

Isn't this what friends are for?
Stick the nut on the tip of a screwdriver with something very sticky but slightly flexible (how about blutack poster adhesive putty. Flex allows the nut to move so the bolt threes can engage.
 
Been there, done that. If that gives you grief: do not EVER buy a Jaguar XJS V12. I could change 12 heater cores in an E9 in the time it takes me to remove one of the four exhaust manifolds on the Jag. Any of the four, they´re all equally impossible.

Don´t get me started on the handbrake. Or the fuel tank. Or adjusting the valves. Or getting the heads off. Or the front crank seal. Or the transmission mount. Or changing the spark plugs. Or the sandwich plate.

Nope: not accepting any complaints about working on any E9.

Get an E31 850 and we can start comparing notes...
 
hint- nobody puts them back......

I do but I've done this over and over. close your eyes and think positive thoughts.

I will channel your spirit. Took the heater core and evap unit to get checked and install a new expansion valve too.
 
Frank's Red Hot Sauce, I use that SH-- for everything. Seriously, I have a box of 3M strip caulk and I use it for everything.

Interestingly I started a thread a few months back on the E24 forum of impossible jobs and any post-traumatic insight which is where this one seems to be going.
 
You will take a pic of the valve before you remove it right?
Reminds me of a cane spider that's been run over by a truck.

yep. The mechanic I had for our '91 750iL called them "$1,000 cars. ANY maintenance job done was a minimum of $1,000. You had to remove everything to do anything." Not unlike, oddly enough, an old Hodaka motorcycle.

I've found that taking the seats out actually helps, sometimes you can get a better reach around angle on everything.
 
It seems cars are built around the heater core. The little core gets put on the assembly line first and then *everything* gets built around it...
 
Wow, I still am recovering from the many hours my son and I twisted and contorted under his dash while we replaced the heater core in his E36 two months ago. Quite a test, but it did get done.
Chris, you have been a source of inspiration and encouragement for so many with your helpful input and calm insights through many repairs and inquiries, I know you will solve this and offer the usual suggestions and tips. I hope to not have this job present itself in the near future however!

Welcome, you are too kind. I simply try to return the favor to the many coupe owners here who have contributed over the years as well. And when selling parts I first consider who might need them and not how much I can charge. This is really a family to me, not just a community, and I enjoy helping others even in a very small way. So many here have helped me as well, that's what we are here for.

Good on the expansion valve. That's why I had to take mine apart.

So there are magnets that fit inside sockets that can help in this situation.
Use 1/4 drive size with long extension and maybe a universal joint unless it's like mine and swivels to easily.:x

Like Don said I'm not sure I put them back but I did not remove the heater core only all the AC.
