Thanks:(:(

Take

the lower steerrig cover off by the four screws. Find the ignition switch, pull/ push it back into it's sleeve while turning the key.

Stuck BMW ignition won't turn

I took off the steering cover underneath
But all I see and feel is a solid cover
Over what looks like to be the ignition
I don't see a sleeve or any thing to push or pull?

Thanks

Hi!

61P is referencing the solid cover under the steering wheel column. This would reveal the switch. Look at the illustration. Left to the number "1" (see the arrow?) are wires that lead to the back of the switch. Gently push on the wires toward the switch (opposite direction of arrow) and you will likely see that there is movement. The switch is held together by crimping. After a number of years it gets loose. If you notice the looseness, you will understand.

To avoid confusion, the grub screw "1" is what secures the entire electrical switch assembly to the steering column. You do not need to disturb this if all you are attempting to do is investigate whether the switch needs some TLC to get you on the road. If the switch is loose, compress it back together, but avoid pulling it apart as with the second illustration.

Typical bottom "trim panel" to be removed is No. 11 below. If you have an adjustable steering column, the trim panel may appear different (see bottom).

here's a quick question .. when I got in there the whole barrel was loose turning almost seeming to fall out of its sleeve kept pushing in finally it seemed to fit in... how do I remedy this to be secure so I don't have this problem again.

Thanks so much!!

hey Donovan,

glad you got it home, i just heard your message - sorry i missed your call, but i leave my phone on vibrate on the weekend. it looks like you got good advice. when i changed the switch on my bavaria (20 years ago), as i remember it was a compression fit - you just tapped it into place.

keep her on the road

mmm

If the switch is turning then tighten the grub screw shown as number one in the picture. Usually just the plastic end with wires comes loose as it's staked in three places and every time you turn the key there's a twisting action that loosens it after time.

If the whole barrel is turning look upwards for two bolts. Originally thoses are shear bolts. But if they were replaced at sometime in the life of the car they may just be bolts that need tightened. There's a whole procedure for that condition in the repair manual. Pls. confirm if that's what you're talking about and it usually means the key is turning farther too. If you're using two keys make sure not to use the wrong one. ( I have two- the passenger door is different- something to fix on my bucket list.)

Hopefully it's the grub screw that's loose that holds the switch in the barrel. Yes, the switch only fits one way.

Here is what I think may have caused the barrel to get loose..
apparently my mechanic could not find a screw that was so small so he put one in that is bigger, at least the head of it looks to be. I do not think it snugs down as well, at least now looking at it .. thoughts? Also does anyone know where I can get a real grub screw since my car is missing that ?

grind/ file

the existing screw to a point so it will self tap into the switch.

Available new though or try the hardware store- M3x5. 07119904210 GRUB SCREW - M3X5
