HIGH OUTPUT M30 (UPDATED 4/15...new price and info)

Hi guys,

I reached out to Mario last week to come on here and comment, and although he hasn't done it yet, he did give me a couple of bits of info that I should share.

First of all is the price. I had included the labor to build the engine in my asking price, and he said that was wrong. So I lowered the asking price by $5,000 to reflect that. The new price is now $8000, plus shipping.
Second bit of info was the Schrick 272 cam. In a previous conversation with Mario, I thought he said it was a 272, but I guess I misunderstood him. In our latest emails, he said he has no info related to what cam he installed. So, in light of this, I have removed any mention of it in the original listing.

Sorry guys, I guess I should've had Mario write the ad for me! Anyway, I've updated the original listing.

Sorry!
-George

Seems like a bargain to me especially as it includes the intake and exhaust headers. I paid $1500 for a set of restored 45DCOEs alone (no linkage or manifold). If the carbs have been tuned (dyno), that alone is worth $1000. Of I didn’t already have a $$$ hot motor (from VSR1), I would be interested in this.

I'm guessing that there is a track cam in that head?

6 bolts, a new gasket and a seal could shed some light.

"head with cam, rockers, valve springs were purchased used (low hours) as a unit out of an E9 race car"

Have to ask - where will you source vacuum from for brake booster?

I’m doing a high output engine also…

Would you like a spare?!! :):)

Beautiful engine! I love the old school look of Webers. My '77 911 Carrera 3.0 had them as well, and I can't tell you how many times I popped the decklid and just sat there and looked at the engine. I do the same with the M30.

No idea about the vacuum, sorry. That would've been up to Mario.

George, I, for one would like to buy it. Seriously. Really. Scout's honour.

In order to do so, I require specs, not guesstimates, compression, leak down, etc.

100% Parts list, clearances, compression, ring type, piston, rod, bearings, exact cam, etc, etc.
I am well aware you have made a list, it is very clear, but anybody can write anything, specially on a closed and shut engine.
I mean put it on a Dyno, the proof is in the pudding (graph paper).

You are a very likeable fellow, and like to trust my fellow e9ers.

But please convince me as how do I know 100% what I am buying, and I don't really care if Mr. Bovensiepen built it.

Once I have all I require, I can make an educated decision.

Thank you!
Best regards,
Alberto

Thanks. Yeah, it certainly is good looking. I pull the cover off and look at it all the time, haha.

It should run fine on pump gas...it was built knowing that it was going to be a street engine.

One more issue, on this comment. If the engine was in a 'race car' and ran on pump gas, (W/ Ethylene?) The word 'should', scares me to death.
why was it built, and installed in a race car, knowing that it was going to be a street engine.? Hours?

Thanks.

don’t forget this is being sold at a huge discount compared to the original cost. Even $14000 is cheap for a fully trimmed M30 race motor with dyno sheet. Maybe the best thing is to contact Mario at VSR1 for more info? Buy buying a ‘used’ motor like this always has some risk.

I totally agree with what you said. It was my hope that the fact that Mario built it gives it legitimacy, but without any input from him, I'm out here on my own amongst a bunch of guys who don't know me from a hole in the wall. I've already lost a ton of money on this stillborn project, but more importantly to me, every interaction I have with the engine, gearbox, and the 635 shell it was all going to go into just reminds me that I'll never be able to drive a manual gearbox again (I explained this in my introduction to new members post), and it breaks my heart. That, plus the fact that I had to sell my M635 as well is pretty tough to handle. That's kind of a round about way to say that I'm not going to spend any more money on it. I'm kind of thinking now that my best bet will be to part the engine out. What do you guys think??

Thanks John. Please see my new comment above. I'm starting to think my best bet will be to part it out. Everything I do reminds me that I'll never be able to experience this engine, or a dogleg gearbox...the longer it takes to sell this stuff, the more I think about it. Once this is all behind me, I can start looking for an E92 M3 with DCT gearbox and move on...with my left ankle resting on the dead pedal, haha.

First - let me say you appear to be a really upstanding guy.

But- your ad has many problems.

In the beginning you say “unit out of an E9 race car”

Later you say “ it was built knowing that it was going to be a street engine.”

And then you say it has a 272 cam which is BMW factory stock for a grocery getter.

Can’t be all 3.

Suggest you take off cam plate and take pics.

"Carbs, intake, head with cam, rockers, valve springs were purchased used (low hours) as a unit out of an E9 race car"
This is from my listing. I wanted it to mean that these parts were from the E9 race car. They were put onto an engine that was meant for a street car. Sorry for the confusion.

I thought Mario said it had the 272, I must've misunderstood him.

If someone can point out where the cam plate is, how to remove it, and if it just bolts back on or what...I'll do it.

As you can see, I posted the invoices.

I will probably leave the listing up for a couple of weeks and then just part it out...it'll probably be easier to sell. What are your opinions on this?

If anyone wants a particular part, let me know.
