Did BMW ever campagne the e3 in any sort of competition? What class was it and what did the cars look like? I'm considering what I'm going to do with my $900 project car and I'm thinking about going more hot rod-ish than stock. Something like this 1971 MB 300SEL that won at Spa

(Down the page a little)

This MB is a little over the top for what I'm trying to do, I'm trying for something less radical but certainly along the same theme. No roll cage but wide tires and lowered stance and possibly flared fenders if needed. And not like the couple of cars we've seen recently on Stanceworks . It will have a modified turbo M102 (yes, I know, the M106 is supposed to be better) of sorts in it with a number of modifications. I'm targeting somewhere north of 300HP so I'd like a chassis and appearance to go with it.

I'm looking for pictures (and possibly specs) for inspiration. I've also been watching the "lose you belt" thread too.

Edit: Just found this one, sort of a "go by" but I still would like more ideas

Excellent! Yes, I missed that thread. It doesn't look like many of them were highly modified, just a roll bar and some lights. I think I have a cunning plan now. Thanks, and pass on more if you find them

BMW E3's were popular saloon racers in the UK in the 70's and 80's. You can read
a fun bit of story about one in Jeremy Walton's book "Only Here for the Beer"...
a biography of storied brit racer Gerry Marshall. See a snap of it at Silverstone in 1977 here:

That car will be at Monterey next month, it is now Golf Yellow and right hand drive.

Bit out there but they used to run the 3.0 si at Bathurst over here in Australia for a few years in the early 70's. Production touring class , so very close to standard and pictures are hard to come by. Nothing like the Merc but no flares and I don't think a roll cage at that time.

See if you can dig up some pics....did you know any of the race teams/drivers? They may still have some photos in some albums somewhere. That would be cool.
