Does anyone know where to buy the 3 pieces of insulation that go on the underside of the hood. I want the ones that are reflective aluminum looking.
Thanks

hood pads

I got mine with the aluminum face from Carl Nelson years ago. If I did it again, I would get the standard kind without the aluminum face.

Underhood pads--

The mylar--not aluminum--covered underhood pads are/were a poor replacement for the original type when the original type was unavailable from BMW for several years.

i wouldn't hang the mylar stuff on any Coupe--except possibly a parts car. Just my strong feeling about a poor substitute for the "real thing".

My OEM pads have been on for three years and 15K miles now and not one speck has deteriorated. If I have to replace them in 20 years I am OK with that.

Any recomendations on what type of adhesive to use when replacing the hood insulation pads?

We have been discussing this on the Porsche 928 (Pelican site). A lot of the insulation re-sellers recommend 3M Spray adhesive #80. However, from the boards experience, in humid applications (even fogy San Diego) and/or if you have not completely removed the glue residue the insulation peels.

The best substance is Weldwood brush-on contact adhesive it comes in a QT can, HD and other sources. Apply it to both surfaces and let it get tacky for some time, longer is better, then put the two surfaces together. No peel after years, great for carpet as well.

The key for any chosen adhesive to work best is to clean the surface very well...better than the wife likes the toilet clean(a quote). To do that use PB Blaster catalyst and a plastic type bondo scraper/wallpaper blade many times over an hour of time and then clean the PB residue with any grease/wax remover. If the hood is still on the car cover the engine and fenders well. Sounds like some work but you will only do it once.

I purchased the insulation from this source which was posted on the original post.

I was a bit disappointed in the quality. While the cut and fit appears good, the material is just basic 3/8" foam rubber with a weak adhesive backing. The OEM was more substantial with a serious adhesion face and a more dense foam.

This will probably work - for a while. The seller came up with a good template but it is not worth $108 + shipping. The seller will offer return, but I may just keep it and chock it up to experience.

Do you know how that one compares to these from Maximillian?

i am really interested,

the choice here in europe is walloth&nesch, but I have seen it in a car and is the same stuff, very well fitted to the hood, but very simple-poor material, an open cell foam

any advise on a better solution close to my place?

Excuse my ignorance bit what is this insulation meant to do . Is it to keep heat away from the bonnet making it hotter in the engine bay or is for sound insulation purposes.
Thanks Paul

Hood pad

Guys,

My belief is that it's there to protect the paint from cracking ( fine alligatoring)from heat soak. Maybe that situation doesn't happen as much with paint formulas now from then.

It's listed as sound insulation in the books - maybe does both?
