Hood release knob

Trying to install a new knob on the hood release lever, the old one cracked.

Using reasonable force the knob does not go fully into place. Afraid more force can break the hinge that supports the mechanism. What is the trick?

Hollow it out thats what i did

Mine went in with a little love from a rubber mallet.

Xacto knife surgery should be last resort. I am no surgeon.
