I am thinking of a motor and transmission upgrade for my '72CSi 3.0 and 4 spd. The engine has been rebuilt w/ mild cam, headers, electronic ignition, and MANY new FI parts ( I also have an extra brain for the car that has been checked out as OK ). Everything is currently installed and running and shifting well. What can I expect to get for everything? Should I sell it off in parts, or as a whole? Thanks, John

Almost 100 people look at this post and not one person has an idea or opinion on what to expect to get when trying to sell a motor? I find that hard to believe. Thanks for the help!

Saying that, I expect to get a few bonehead remarks from a couple of people, but maybe others will get the message: this forum is set up to share information, right? I was to trying to decide recently on wheather to complete a purchase on a CSL, and posted asking what it's value is. Bunch of replies from others trying to compare their car's options to mine and if it is correct or not, but no one wanted to tell me the car was worth xxxx$'s. It ended up selling to someone else for under $30K!!!! Was it worth more than that? I don't know cause no one shared.

We remained silent in deference to the Sherman antitrust act as our price recommendations could being construed as price fixing between sellers/owners. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_fixing

Only OPEC ministers get away with collusion in the open, we lowly coupe owners have to play by the rules.

What's fair?

I think you have to understand that views may have been from any number of people, including folks who have no interest whatsoever in the subject matter. (I rarely visit this board, so this is the first time I read your post.) And, by analogy, sellers of all sorts have the same lament, when, for unknown reasons, they don't get any nibbles for their wares, let alone sales.

As evident by the posts on this board, including your own, coupe owners tend to be a VERY opinionated lot. I can think of one who has left notes on my windshield complaining about the state of my original interior. That being said, value of coupe mechanicals is in the eye of the (coupe) beholder and then there is the issue of supply and demand.

Next, consider that you are offering a heavy bulky item. Because of the weight alone, locals would seem to be your prime target. Otherwise, the shipping adds too much to the total cost. Secondarily, what is your local market like and including demand? I have no idea how many (Gray-market as opposed to domestically available) coupes are in your neighborhood, let alone, how many have a need for a fuel injected engine.

The next factor might be the exact condition of your engine. Some coupe purists might feel attached to their own numbered blocks but could care less about add-ons. Others may not give a tinker's damn about originality. You fail to give any real particulars as to the date of rebuild, who did the rebuilding, compression and power ratings. I can imagine an engine coming from Holman and Moody or Metric Mechanic or Korman, might command a higher price than for one from an unknown builder. On the other hand, if my engine threw a rod and I was in your area, I might jump on your engine even for a higher price than I normally might pay.

What is normal? I just don't know. If I could get a nearby low mileage 7 or 6 series L-Jetted European (high compression) engine for cheap, I might go for it. Your engine at a markedly higher price would have to be special to appeal to me.

In sum, you asked a question that has so many variables it is difficult if not impossible to answer. Are you from a big shop that will stand behind the work? Warranty? I would start with an amount comparable to the going rate for a 6 series engine in your area.

I do not mean to be condescending but this is a free bulletin board. As the cliche goes, sometimes you get what you pay for. I am sorry if this is not the definitive answer you seek. A couple of other suggestions might be to look at the roundel and similar BMW publications's classifieds. The same might be true for publications dealing with European cars in general.

Your post needed to stand on it's own merits. You will have a hard time getting a value when you don't include the important info.
How many miles on that engine/ tranny?
When was it rebuilt?
Are you a 70 year old that likes to putt around town or are you 19 years old who spends every weekend tracking your car?
A pic is worth a thousand words. If you engine bay is spotless thats great, if it is a grease pit, no good.
A compression test takes an hour and makes the difference between zero worth for the engine and 1000 bucks.
Be prepared to sell your engine/tranny for about 2k or so.
Cheers!
