How thick do weber spacers need to be

I just did a weber conversion on my '74 and am trying to get the carbs lower so the stock air cleaner doesn't indent the sound pad on the hood as much. The kit I have came with what I think are 1/2" spacers. I'm wondering if I could get away with the 1/8" spacers to gain some room or if I am going to have an issue with heat soaking or hard hot starts or some other issue. I hated to give up on the Zeniths but I must say that my car runs stronger and starts better with out of the box Webers than it ever has with the Zeniths after countless hours and dollars of rebuilding, replacing parts, tuning, etc. Just wish they were a little lower.
 
out of curiousity, did you ever have the bottom of the zeniths "trued" up? they have a tendency to warp slightly and leak air.
 
Be careful that doesnt mess up the linkage geometry, the aftermarket Weber linkage already can go over-center and lock WOT. AMHIK

I initially found that I had bad gaskets on the bases of the zeniths that were leaking badly. Flattened the bases, they weren't that bad. I thought that would be the fix. That was just the beginning of things I found wrong and corrected. I really did try everything including a dyno tune with a zenith "expert." I know a lot of members love their zeniths but I threw in the towel and can't say I regret it. I had a Bavaria 20 years ago with webers that ran great for years without me even really knowing what webers were at the time. I'll keep my zeniths in a box for the next owner to monkey with.

I modified the pivot point of the weber linkage to avoid the over rotation surprise that it sounds like people have had. That sounds scary.
 
I didn't do the installation of my Webers but it was the JAM engineering kit. It fits well and has been working well for over 30 years. I will try to remember to look at it tonight to see how thick the spacer is. I agree, the Webers work better than my Zeniths ever did.

BTW, I was one who had an over center experience with the linkage. You can be assured, I personally readjusted the linkage so it would never happen again.
 
Sorry it took so long to reply. Your thread did not pop back up to remind me.

I did look at my spacers and they are about 1/8" thick. They might be a little bit thicker but not much. I couldn't get a caliper in there to get an exact measurement. The gaskets on each side get in the way too.
