My carbed car didn't have those hoses anymore when I got it.

Yes, there are two! They go to opposite side of opposite carbs. Why?
And what does Don mean by retard? I thought that more vacuum always means more RPMs therefore more advance.

so your setup is correct !! no matter your engine bay looks shady (being very generous ;-0)

the carb device (lung reservoir) might have two effecs: advance and retard, or only one: advance

with those two hoses you place both effects in the 2 tubes on the carb lung

again my carb lung has only one tube, so only one effect, advance
