So, imagine for a very scary moment that BMW never conceived the E9.,,,, scared!?

What classic would you pursue if the E9 never existed?

I ask given my wife just asked me.... I had two cars (non BMW) that came to mind

A couple instantly come to mind

1. Mercedes 250SL

2. Alfa Romeo Montreal

Undoubtedly, it would have to be a MB "low grill" 280SE 3.5 coupe. An E9 rival back in the day with equal beauty. Performance wise, the big MB V8 coupe with Bosch D-jet FI is an equal to the 3.0CSi and maybe a little faster. Build quality is much much superior than our beloved E9s.

1988 Ferrari Mondial 3.2 or later t coupe, not red. Comfortable, 2+2, understated ( for a Ferrari) grand touring.

911 Carrera, Alfa 1750 GTV, Datsun 240-Z, probably in about that order. None of these are very E9 like. Bert, that Merc is Gorgeous. If I didn't have an old car to putter on and wanted to simplify my life (other than cost), then I think I would like to own a Cayman S like Scott gets to drive.

Edit, there is a Citroen SM on BAT this morning...that would be a challenge, but what a design.

Alfa Montreal is a good answer, but I might be more of a GTV man.

However I just went a completely different direction and added one of these, so who knows?

But Merced were so much less sporting!

Pagoda top 280 SL Malaga and tan leather

E type Jaguar coupe (red)

I have an e-type, and it is inferior due to it being a decade older wrt technology. But properly restored it could suffice as a daily driver.

A Ferrari 365 four seated would be my choice, with a 2002tii a cheaper second choice.

Off topic, we may think of e9s as sports cars, but really they are GTs.
I've put 350miles on my new toy since last Wednesday, and THAT is a proper sports car!

another cah

I would like a Lotus Elan in a bad way but, based upon what a I read about reliability, its a better third car then second. We take for granted how dependable the E9s are once properly sorted.

love my cayman s - no fuss, start it and drive it and enjoy every minute of it ... totally modern, but has a soul.

but if i was getting an older car, the gtv would be a great choice - along the same lines as a 2002tii, there are also a few 60's alfas as well. i've always loved 60's jag xke fixed head coupes - but they've become expensive. i wished i fit in a dino 246, another of the prettiest cars made. funny enough, just looked at my room number here in London - 246. ate in a restaurant in decatur, ga saturday night - no. 246. must be telling me something.

I have seat time in the 2000 GTV, 1800ES, 280SL, and S1 XKE. While all are enjoyable, the E9 is still my preference for top driving enjoyment. Alfa a close 2nd.
