I went to turn off my car today and nothing happened.

The key turns but feels loose and can be pulled out in the full counterclockwise position. If turned clockwise, you get the usual high pitched squeal.

I had to resort to pulling the wire going to the distributor to turn off the car.

Broken elements inside ignition lock cylinder?

Thanks in advance.

Bez,

It's probably the grub screw that holds the ingnition securely in place has come loose. Unfortunately this happens from time to tiime and has to be tightened. If you do a search for "grub screw", there are helpful links that show you where to find the tiny little screw under the steering column. You just have to make sure you get the key alignment back to the correct position so that engages properly into the back of the ignition swith.
