a year ago my windows stopped working ,all 4 of them, all of a sardine, bang.
I tested the fusebox, the wires behind the fusebox , every wire I can find, there's power heading somewhere but not getting to the window switches.
the PO did a bodge job on the wiring and I get confused easily.
probably about 20 plus hours in total under that dash.

a year ago I must have bumped the small button on the underside of the dash that switches off the windows.

I was near galway years ago, a old man told me that he did sell his 3.3L automatic (I needed it for spares)for 25 euro, if I was able to start the car....the man sold me the car for 25 euro and I did the worst trip of my life from galway to North Italy , just cause the car was terrible .
he had to put the gearbox in P or neutral to start the engine, but he forgot about it...simple as that.

We all forget. I was at a high performance driver's school years ago. The driver and passenger windows must!! be down on the track. Mine were frozen. Three guys tearing my door panels apart when I remembered the Red Buttons. My face was a red as the buttons.

We are not alone in this universe.

Guys, I've owned this one for 5 years, ,I owned my 69 2800cs for 6 years before this one.
I never knew what the button was for, I'd click it and nothing would happen, I'd click it again, still nothing, just another button that did not work, must find out what it used to do..... next...!

The circuit breakers were introduced in `73 when they changed the motors and switches. I never knew if they were also on non U.S. delivered coupes, guess they were. But they aren't on the 2800CS.

Im also having a problem getting power to my windows. Are these the 2 red buttons to the right of the steering wheel next to the green light? Are both for the Window?

Happened on my wife's 5-series after a smog test one time. I had never experienced the switch before but did my internet search on the problem before taking the car back to the shop. Got lucky with that one!

Thks. But I still have some issues. Using the rocker switches that are immediately attached to the rear quarter windows they both move up and down very easily, smooth and at a moderate pace. But using the switches up by the the gear shift the quarter windows are sluggish and sometimes do not even move. The Front window are not moving at all. The breakers seem to be good. Before I take out the motors to the front windows to see if they are locked up and need re greasing, I'm wondering if there is something else I should check. Maybe wiring to these front switches? Any suggestion is appreciated. I really do not want to pull these front motors because they look like they could be a hassel.

Check the wiring first, the action of the rear motors is a clue, the console switches aren't getting enough power out. Removing front motors isn't bad, not like rears for sure.

I will check the wiring as suggested. I read in previous forums that the front motors sometime freeze up after sitting for some time and need to be freed/loosened up but before I go the the trouble I'll check the wiring. Thanks

The problem you are experiencing is almost certainly simple oxidation on the switch connectors, inside the switches, and on the brushes and armatures in the window motors. This is caused by evil black forest elves that sneak into your garage at night a wreak havoc. They are also responsible for any rust you might find on your coupe.

You can take your efforts to cure the problem to ridiculous levels but you might get satisfaction by using pliers to tighten up the spade lugs on the front switches. The motors will draw many amps and even a slightly weak connection anywhere in the circuit will reduce the motor voltage (and performance) considerably. Also a bit of WD40 on the motor bushings and some spray lube on the track mechanism and all should be well.

I personally have gone overboard making my windows work fast. I now use the switches to power relays and I installed a direct feed to the relays from the batteries. I also polished the armature and lubricated the entiure mechanism. My efforts are document in the following thread:

I still challenge anyone to a rear window up/down race.
