My dad found a complete -84 Marine M30 engine (also called B220) for cheap, so took it home to see if there was any good parts on it, and it has a great -84 head with deep dimples and hole for the fuelpump and some other small bits.

But what I wanted to share is a nice feature on these B220's, seems like they have a brilliant inspection hatch for the rod bearing on cylinder number 6.

Never seen that before! :D

Looks like #6 decided the block needed an inspection hole so it made one. o_O

Yeah, the head gasket was stamped mid 90's, so I guess it threw a rod around that time or even earlier.
No sign of oil leaks, and that's about all the block does around that area - keep the oil in. So the plate did its job for 25 years!

Learn something every day, very cool find, thanks for sharing;)

Also later type block, without raised side waterchannel.

I think you’d have to be a very special type of engine “builder” to come up with that “fix “
I didn’t realize BMW did marine engines , I wonder what kind of boats were they fitted to ??

clever idea to have the sea water pump in line with the camshaft. I would have expected a belt driven one.
I also see there what is a water cooled exhaust manifold ?
Is it raw water cooled of is there a heat exchanger with antifreeze on the engine ?

"BMW Marine GmbH was BMW's marine engine division. BMW's interest in marine engines dated back to 1913; they began making marine engines in 1919 after World War I.

In the early 1970s, marinized versions of BMW's 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder gasoline engine were marketed as the Model 410 and 411. In 1977, BMW AG established a separate marine division, incorporated as BMW Marine GmbH. BMW Marine's head office and assembly plant were located in Verviers, Belgium.

BMW Marine continued to marinize BMW's production automobile engines. BMW's 2.0-litre, four-cylinder M10 engine became the B 130, and the M30 six-cylinder engines in 2.8 and 3.3-litre variations became the B 190 and B 220 models. Later, the larger 3.5-litre M30 with electronic ignition became the B 635. Model numbers related to the engine's horsepower.

With a downturn in the automotive market in 1987, and a lack of significant success in the recreational marine market, BMW decided to close the marine division. The Belgium plant and assets were sold to Mercury Marine of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin."

Yes, the exhaust manifold is watercooled.
The engine has a heat exchanger for seawater/engine coolant.
It also has a heat exchanger for seawater/oil, which according to the previous owner was a known problem on these, they started leaking internally = engine kaput quickly.

Here are some pics on the manifold and heat exchangers + some other pics.
