I feel very dumb but what is the trick to installing the chrome cap on the rear armrest? You can't tighten the screw with the cap in place but you can't insert the cap once the screw os tightened? Hope it is okay to post E3 question in E9 section. Seems like the issue may overlap with E9 expertise and hoping for larger audience for more response. Thanks.

it would probably be better in the e3 general discussion, as you might get e3 guys that know the answer to respond more quickly.

i used to know the answer to this, but since i no longer have an e3 ... i dunno exactly. most arm rests of this era had a screw hole on the bottom side that went into the door on a slight angle ... which would have gone thru the plate / cap. but the attachment plate seems to have spring clips to hold the cap in place ... and the armrest screws to the door in a place where you couldn't get to it ... so doesn't the cap slide on the arm rest and clip into place?

Thanks for the info. Yes the screw is at a slight angle and it seems like there should be a corresponding hole in the cap but there isn't. Maybe i need to drill one.

And to answer your question I could not get the cap to slide onto the armrest far enough to provide access to the screw.

But I haven't been able to get the cap far enough onto the armrest to expose the screw for tightening before snapping the cap into place.

try putting some soapy water on the arm rest or another slippery substance ... then try to slip the cap over it.

Just did this three times (cause I had to do one of the rears twice). As suggested, slide the cap on first, then tighten the screw, then slide the cap down over the screw and catch in place on the metal clip that is under the screw.

The key to sliding the cap onto the armrest is to squeeze the armrest and slowly work the cap up the arm rest a little bit at a time. You need to squeeze all the way around and slowly push the cap up while compressing the arm rest material under the cap as you move it up the arm rest. You really only need to move it up a few centimeters, just enough to get a narrow Phillips head driver at the screw (at a slight angle). Don't try to get the cap so far up the arm rest that you can get the screw straight on because it is not necessary. As rsporsche suggested, a little soapy water may help, though it may make it tough to get a grip on the arm rest to push under the cap edge as you slide it up.
Good luck.
