Did a search but could find no current info. What does an interior restoration of seats and carpets cost now?
I know there will be regional labor cost differences, but trying to get some general framework to use. thanks.

There is a discussion going on right now on seats in the Projects and Restoration Forum.

About $5500 here in San Francisco with a professional auto upholsterer using Gahh provided CS leather seat kits and carpets. Would be considerably cheaper (maybe $1k) using a World Upholstery seat kit and carpet set.

Thanks. Can you tell me the name of the upholsterer or the shop?

Is the difference in price the kind of leather or the grade of leather?

Google his shop. There is a bunch of satisfied customers who speaks glowingly of his work.

He runs his fully equipped shop out of his home garage in the SF Bernal Heights district. I got a estimate from him a while back, very nice and knowledgeable gentleman to deal with. When I was at his shop, he was working on a set of horizontally stitched CS seats. There was another set of pre-74 front seats lying around his shop.

Don't know the type of leather he uses, but the premium sample hide shown to me was vat dyed and not just surface dyed, very soft and aromatic. The leather is a much better grade than the much cheaper stuff that is out there.

My coupe is at the upholstery shop right now (Jim's Auto Upholstery in San Diego, CA) and supposed to be done by Friday. For reference, here is what they quoted me:
- complete front & back seats re-upholstery (from hides not from kits): $1600
- headliner + re-covering headliner board at the front: $275 (i supplied the headliner material)

BTW - I saw a Polaris coupe there the day I dropped mine off. They were doing the parcel shelf. Not sure if that's a member here.

Funny you say that. A few friends mentioned to me how it would cheaper to get this type of work done in TJ but I have no desire to cross the border with my coupe!

. When I was at his shop, he was working on a set of horizontally stitched CS seats.

Trying to educate myself... When did E9's used horizontal stitching? Is it a yearly thing? My '74 has horizontal stitches but I have only seen pics of a few cars done the same way.

Thanks,
Victor

Could you post pictures of your new upholstery when you pick them up? Thanks

Update

OK, so I picked up my coupe from Jim's today and I'm somewhat disappointed with the overall experience. They came highly recommended from various sources, so maybe I just lucked out. Or maybe I'm too picky but you tell me:

While I'm very satisfied with the quality and craftsmanship (see attached pix) I am really not happy with the service:
1. they kept my car for 5 weeks whereas I was initially told 1 week. I would still have been happy with 2 weeks, but 5, come on! They never even called me with an update or to keep me informed of the delay. I had to call to ask if I could pick up the car and every time there was a new excuse: waiting for material, my guy is sick, we're too busy, etc... Note that I made an appointment 2 weeks prior to bringing the car, at a time that worked for them.

2. I specifically ask them to do the vertical stitching so that the seats would look period correct (it's a 1970) and I intentionally printed pictures of what the seats should like when finished. Well guess what? They did horizontal stitching throughout. Brenda (Jim's sister) had the balls to say "we'll take $150 off to compensate for the error". For your reference, that's not even 10% of the price. In my world, you make a mistake you stand up and make up for it. I'm not saying that they should pick up the entire bill but $150 felt like a slap in my face. Anyway, that was another issue to negotiate and, as a customer, you really shouldn't have to.

3. the car came back extremely dirty. Not only is it covered in thick dust (it obviously sat outside the entire 5 weeks), the brand new headliner shows finger prints, the brand new carpet was not vacuumed and there are dried glue spots on the brand new leather seats. Yes, these are all minor issues that will clean up easily but it's just not right to do all this renovation work and return the car more dirty that what I delivered.

Anyway, I will stop my rant and go back in the garage and enjoy my new seats, my new carpet and my new headliner :-)

But look what you paid

The price quotes I've gotten here in New England to do each front seat is around $1000, so a front/rear would be easily double what you paid. When you factor that into the equation ... maybe the little issues you experienced aren't that terrible (well other than the stitching). You could sell your new seat "covers" to cover most of the cost of redoing it with the correct pleat orientation and still be at 1/2 of what most of us pay.

Ditto what bfeng said

... Also , "for what it's worth "( sorry , not into acronyms :) ) the horizontal stitching has that "Daytona" look which i think enhaces the look (IMHO)....damn! ...where did that bloody acronym come from ?!

Thanks for posting pictures and input regarding service. It's always good to know in advance, and be prepared. At that price with a bit of precaution it might be worth it to some. I'm considering.

Price and outcome says it is likely they took the car to their Tijuana subsidiary.
Look for evidence of tamales inside the car.
Actually it looks great, I would consider horizontal a tasteful upgrade.

Just curious on how they decided to go with the stitching,were they out of a 74 to start?
Looks very nice for 1500ish! I had just 1 bottom done here in Reno for 650.00 in leather.

@tmason
The seats in the back were the original ones (vertical) but I had installed newer ones in the front (horizontal). Hence, my printing a picture of what the final result should look like and the explicit instructions. But this was omitted in the work order. So I guess they started with the front seats and just went on...

@Arde
Very funny! No, no tamales in the trunk and I'm still looking for the bottle of tequila ;)

@kys911t
You're welcome. Good luck with your project!

@Aussiecsi
I agree with you. At the end of the day I do like the horizontal look. It's very 70's and reminds me of the Miura's interior:

@bfeng
No, no re-doing :-) I don't mind their mistake in retrospect. My point was to provide feedback on Jim's as requested by others here.
