Intermittent missing...electrical issue?

On my 3.0 cs that i recently purchased, a complete tune up was recently completed including new ignition parts, wires, cap, and carbs were tuned (solexes). Car idles well and accellerates smoothly. However, today after running a few minutes i experienced roughness and apparent "missing or misfiring". This was very sporadic. Also, when the missing was occuring the tach was usually not impacted, but once in a while, during the missing the tach would bounce around...indicating to me,that issue was ignition related, not carb related.

When i turned the car off, it was difficult to start..engine would turn over but no firing at all...then after many attepts it fired right up and ran....missing sporadically again.

Any insight or words of wisdom from you BMW gurus would be appreciated.

Thanks

I would check all wires going into and out of the ignition coil. Clean or replace all terminals, inspect each wire. Perhaps these were disturbed in your recent "freshening". And they are so important. Electrons must flow!

When I bought my 2800cs it would barely run. It would catch and splutter about half the time and would die if given any gas. Cleaned the Zenith carbs, no change. The distributor shaft was rusty and the points were bouncing around as the block that rides on lobes was vibrating. I put in a Petronix unit in place of the points and it runs pretty well but when I try to time it, the flash from the timing light is not steady. I can't get a lock on the ball on the flywheel. I think the distributor is in need of a rebuild. Since rebuild kits are hard to find now, I searched on eBay and managed to find a rebuilt one. I haven't put it in yet, but I think that will make it work better.
The recent posts of distributors cut in half by loose spinning parts inside shows they will still run when far from optimum.

Has anyone had their distributor rebuilt? I have a spare that I would like to send out for refurbishment but need a reference if anyone has experience with a place that provides this service. Mike

Suggest looking into the 123ignition distributor instead. Programmable curves no rebuilder can duplicate. Otherwise Advanced Distributors seems to be the preferred place.
