is this a stahl header?

ANyone just buy them? They look the same as mine and Pamps.

Stahl Headers

All of the Stahls I have had or seen do not have individual header flanges like the one on EBay.

Headers

Those sure look like the set I bought last week. According to tracking info they should hit my door step any time now. I think we decided they were Ansa. Not 100% positive of this. I will inspect them then send them over to these guys....Performance Coating at its best - Kool Coat Ceramic Coating
www.koolcoatceramiccoatings.com/ nicad should have his set back from coating guys in his neighborhood by now?

Picking up my headers today on my way up north (if they fit in my roof box) If they don't, the dog refuses to ride with metal parts on the highway and pickup will have to wait.

Bow Wow

That is one picky dog. I have to avoid using the "T" word around my dog or he goes nuts. Leave without him in the truck and he will pout for hours, convinced you are out having dog fun with other dogs. In his mind you have been at the beach all day, reality being hauling bags of concrete or some such! Good one Steve...

Headers

What's with the run on getting headers? Have you done intake/engine work also?

When I was looking for headers last summer for my E28, I was told that Stahl was not making them anymore which also meant that Bavauto was going to stop selling them when their stock ran out which it has. I got lucky and found a set of used ones.

To my knowledge, the only folks selling/making headers now for the M30 are Ireland, Motorsports Downunder (which look great) and Scheissman (I may not have that last one right). There have also been some cheapies pop up on Ebay.

Are there any others?

And those Scheissman headers are pretty in expensive!

That is right

Korman bought the last of the assembled Stahl stock. All the jigs and kits can still be had from Stahl. Last I heard were that all the jigs were still for sale (Stahl) Opportunity if some one wanted to carry on and build these. All the NOS as well as other suppliers are big bucks. The market is small. I guess the deal is that, speaking for myself, coupe guys love to experiment. If the price is right, why not? The CoupeKing....well.... deep pockets required to play there. These odd sets that myself and my brother in Toronto have....1 3/8'' tube size which is OK for a stock motor (according to Korman) 3.0, 3.3, 3.5. Same as the inlet side of the cast B35 manifold. Bigger, say 1 1/2'', and yes....cam, head work, etc. would be needed. Lets see how it goes...once the pipes hit the floor. I have stock down pipe scraps, 35 spec. manifolds, etc. Once I can compare I will dutifully report.

OK

At the risk of talking out my ass....never stopped me before so....the pipes arrived. Measure shows 1 1/2'' pipe to a three into one merge....1 3/4'' then down to a two into one....out at 2 1/4. Flanges match the OEM gasket, some minor port matching looks in order. Cast 35 manifolds are about the same....outlet 1 3/4'' and down pipes same. Hmmm....
Too much for the 3.3? These pipes have also been coated....substance unknown. All comments are more than welcome. Could be another e-bay deal gone wrong, not the first time. Bolt them up and see I guess.

Tod, I hope that was intentional because that's hilarious!

But of course:) Herr Brauler from Hanover high school would be proud.

Pamp, so you are saying these are too much header for a stockish motor? Wonder what I have then. I know in my limited driving it certainly didn't pull near as hard or rev out like my Bavaria did. I have my fingers crossed it re awakens when the carbs are freshened and ignition components working 100%.
Picked the headers up last night and they fit in the roof box with room to spare. They look very nice. Black on the inside and Silver Chrome on the outside. Will post some photos on my return Home Monday.

OK

Nicad....I am unsure at this point....damn. Could your throw the calipers on what you have as to compare? If you look at the spec's for Stahl headers from Korman BMW, they state....
1 1/2 ''....3.0, 3.3, 3.5 motors over 270 HP. In discussions with them they said 1 3/8'' is fine for the stock motor. When I measure B35 cast manifolds, all seems to be same same as the our header dimensions, I said before.
I had to balk as when I asked for a price quote from Korman they e-mailed back
$780. When it came to the deal they said no..."bad price in the computer" $1790 to buy. To me that is just bad business....stick to your quote. They would not. Deep pocket customers line up at their shop so a puke like me....who cares? All I can go by at this point is what I have to measure.
For the normally aspirated motor, back pressure is essential, unlike the turbo where stove pipe is the way to go. This for sure a subject where experience, experimentation, dyno pulls, etc. pays off. All I can do is to try it and see how these work on my 3.3 injected. Unfortunately, I have thus far been unable to find the 635 two bolt down pipes. (for cheap) Otherwise I could cover all bases and compare stock vs B35 vs headers of the racey type.

headers

Others more knowledgeable than me need to weigh on on this topic, but I went through this with my M30 powered E28. In addition to extensive motor work, I also made the decision to go with headers though some (here) counseled me not to.

My impression after the first drive following the install was that I lost low end torque, at least enough to notice. This was from a motor that had extensive head work and was breathing much better. I also had to do some additional tuning to get the fuel mixtures right which restored most (not all) of the lost torque. Change one thing...

Sounds really cool though :-D

My hindsight advice is to have an overall plan and approach fully vetted for what you want to do with various mods, intake, fuel, exhaust, etc. and understand what effect one change will have on another. You can install in stages as your budget/wife allows but its more important that upgrades properly complement each other and will actually work together.

And there is a ton of knowledge on this board about this topic so ask lots of questions!

Well put

Had to work pretty hard this morning as to remove the merge from one leg of the headers....seized hard....worried the wife when she came to check on me in the shop filled with smoke! To quote Rummy, here is the known unknown....Does Stahl measure the tube diameter I.D. or O.D.? Seems a bit anal....WTF....1/8'' yet could it make a radical difference?
If they measure I.D. (1 1/2'') then, Nicad we are good to go. These pipes measure at 1 3/8'' I.D. If they go O.D. in their measure? Hmmm.... Stahl install on the floor at Kormans

Shinier is better I suppose.

Here's the before

And here is the after:

The insides of the Mystery headers are now coated with some heat retaining inner coating.

When I measured them up (which was difficult because they are Oval at the flange) I got about 1.24 to 1.38 inches on the inside. The outside circumference was 1.6 inches. Mine will be breathing through a stock exhaust from the header back for now, at least till it is worn out. The price of the CoupeKing exhaust is a bit steep for me to justify. I also would prefer to keep an original style rear muffler and muted sound. I found the car quite quiet with these headers and stock exhaust in my limited seat time.

Eastwood makes a cast iron grey high temp paint for manifolds good up to 400 degrees. After two years they still look great on the coupe and 2002.
