Is this CSL light weight carpet?

In my ‘72 CSL (2275xxx) I have found a cloth material covering the floors as well as the “driveline” tunnel that is totally different to what I have ever seen in my other e9’s. It is glued in I found out. Initially i thought it was to cover up very bad floor panels, but they are actually looking in quite good shape. It was also installed quite neatly so I now start to wonder if this is a factory light weight cloth that was used in the early CSL’s? It btw consists out of two layers. Top one being a bit thinner than the bottom one. Does anybody recognize?

Hmm! It isn’t what I would expect to see.
The lightweights used black Perlon which is felt-like. I believe that the 911RS used it as well.

It is quite thin, but should be black not white. Unless all the fuzz came off it looks off. May want to check with some lightweight owners for input. Not many on the forum publicly stating what they have, but I know at least 5 members that could possibly PM you, and another with close ties to an active member.

In addition to the carb CSL owners inferred above, the owner of this injected lightweight is on the forum. A few pics of the perlon can be seen. As you can see, it is a bit floppy.

Thank you so much Markos. I have received some pics of the Perlon carpet. With mine being a Städtepaket I still assume the normal carpets were originally in the car. I will hold onto the odd cloth and maybe a carb light weight owner recognizes it.

Although I no longer own it, my carb CSL was #2212437. It had the original factory carpet throughout. It was black, very thin, non-woven, felt-like, Perlon-style carpet, just as @Markos describes. I do not recognize the carpeting in your pictures as being anything like what was in my car, so not sure what it is. Hope this helps!

I have recently purchased what is purported to be an accurate copy of the CSL carpet. It's very thin, and has an almost felt like construction to it. I've seen something very similar in lightweight (not touring) 73 911 RS's. It came from someone that has a very high level of CSL knowledge... I'll let them chime in if they wish to.

Städtepaket/ City package most definitely had the standard carpet and not the light Perlon. In the total 2275 range, only the very few lightweight cars to include Bats had the Perlon along with other light weight features.

Couple pics of the carpet in my trunk/boot. It was very lightweight - almost paper thin and weighed nearly nothing. The gray stuff on the backside was some sort of coating, probably meant to give it a bit more durability, The material itself was so thin it might have shredded.

Thanks Keshav and TedM. I think I can safely say my carpet does not look anything like this. For now I stick to my notion that this is something that a previous owner has glued onto the panels. I will hold onto the fabric for potential future reference.

I have a factory correct Perlon kit for my car. Although it is a very accurate reproduction, the end result is nothing to lust after. It weighs nothing though, and achieves the weight reduction goals that BMW was (and I am) after. I would like to get my 2800CS close to carb CSL weight specs. Not achievable with a B35, dogleg, and thick steel panels, but one can try. Plus I need to offset the few lbs that the HL wipers weigh.
