I've decided to move towards parting with my car. I don't drive it much any more, partly because the roads here are boring, and partly because I want a convertible that I can fit kids into for cruising to the beach top down. I'm a Florida redneck now, so I must drive accordingly.

This has been a 40 year E9 journey for me, starting in 1986 with my 1st coupe, a Malaga 2240521. Then in 2010 I bought my current one and it has been the most satisfying car purchase/hobby endeavor for me, especially my forum membership - I've met many of you all in person and couldn't ask for a better group of friends and of course that will continue regardless.

Things change and, thinking I'd be buried in it with my hands on the Petri, I've decided now is as good a time as any to start the process. I don't have a specific time frame, so maybe I will talk myself out of it, but I doubt it. Here's some background (in no particular order) and a few pics:

1972 BMW 3.0cs
Polaris/Marine Blau leather
VIN 2240284

Multiple show winner over the years including LOTA in Hilton Head a few years ago. 2-time Parker Spooner award winner for best E9 at BMWCCA Oktoberfest (I gave one away). 3-time Amelia Island Cars & Coffee accepted display participant. However, driving to the shows and seeing my E9 buddies was my main interest, not showing. Several road trips >1500 miles each.

I am the 4th owner. First was a banker from Greenwich CT who bought it at Hoffman in NYC and drove it 2k miles. 2nd was Suzanne DeKuyper (owner of the DeKuyper distillery) who kept it on her farm as a summer car in VT, only adding another 2k miles. 3rd owner was a dentist in NY. I bought it from his son after he passed away. All three owners only used the car sparingly as it was never a daily driver. It had 38k miles when I purchased it in 2010, just turned 100k last year.

Approx 2000 miles on rebuilt original engine with new 10:1 pistons. Schrick 284 cam, Stahl headers, triple Italian Weber DCOM40’s with very rare VGS racing air box & intake manifold, and CSi filter box (as spec’d by VGS). Currently that's stored and now running trumpets and foam filters for more intake music. I have the original Zeniths. NOS BMW warranty head from SFDon ported to match the manifold. Runs perfectly and everything works including air conditioning. Cooling stays at 190 in 95-degree traffic with ac on.

All shift linkage upgraded to bronze bushings etc and shifts crisply and smoothly.

Engine bay redone during the rebuild last year and looks new – no rust on fenders at all under the sound deadening mats and the seams and welds are perfect.

Every mechanical component has been replaced or rebuilt by me over the years along with immense help from Don with the head and other advice. A highly regarded local machinist did the block and rotating assembly. Most if not all my work is documented here on the forum. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive cross country tomorrow.

Genuine 5-hole Alpina wheels (73 date code) with <1 year old Michelin XWX tires.

Very rare and near mint leather CSL Petri 38cm steering wheel with correct hub and horn. Pure driving pleasure to look at and use.

Original interior in amazing shape including headliner. Driver seat has some cracking but has been well maintained. All the wood is beautiful and original untouched. The windows are very fast.

CSL style speaker gauge cluster with oil pressure, volts, and water temp. I have the original dash speaker cover in perfect shape. Has the original Becker Europa and matching 4 speakers delivered with the car at dealer when originally purchased. It was rebuilt by Becker Autosound and new speakers under the original covers. Power amp under back seat with BT and a subwoofer under the driver seat all sound great (for a coupe) but I prefer the engine alone.

5 speed Getrag 265 from a low mileage 7 series with no noise and shifts beautifully. 3:64 diff and also have a 3:45 to go with it. No leaks from engine, transmission, or diff.

Carl Nelson lowering springs and neg camber plates with Bilsteins. Great stance and ride.

Too many upgrades to list but mostly all documented within my 13k forum posts. Lights, wiring, relays, and all the right mods. V12 850 starter, 123 distributor, etc etc. All an outlet for my E9 obsession.

No rust in rockers or fender tops/wheel well cavities, above the fuse and glove boxes etc or anywhere else and I can provide pics. All cavities wax-sprayed years ago and maintained religiously with 2x yearly cleanings.

Paint was done in late 80’s by 3rd owner and is still in great shape with road trip dings here and there but overall in nice condition. You can drive and park without worry. The doors shut effortlessly with one finger.

I don’t think you’ll find a better maintained and driving E9 out there. I have cruised at 90mph for hours and it wants to go for more (see pic), and the wipers are screwed on so as to never fly off. It needs nothing but a respectful owner who will drive, maintain, and enjoy it like I have. My mantra was to do period performance upgrades with the ability to reverse if desired but I don’t think anyone will!

I can provide any additional info as needed and will be adding more as I think of it. I’ll be posting current pics of the usual places in the days to come.

Fly in and drive it home. 100k.

Some pics and memories of coupe life that I hope someone can also experience:

Wow Steve.

If I were still looking for a coupe yours would be at the top of the list. This will make a great ride for the next owner. The price is reasonable given all that you have done to keep the car in top shape and I hope the sale process is a smooth one.

Hopefully you will still hang out here after your coupe is in the rear view mirror.

I also think you should reach out to the high bidder of that fjord that just RNM on carsandbids at $99k. Yes it’s a CSi which often commands higher price but with your upgrades that $100k is more than reasonable

Wow Steve! That is a great car that has seen a LOT of love. If I were still in the market, I would buy this car for $100k today. @Tate, are you still looking? This vaults to the top of the list in my book! Good luck Steve! :)

Thanks for the idea, not sure how to do that but will look into it. Yes regarding Csi vs Cs, I guess it comes down to preference for triple webers and a/c vs injection. No lose either way.

NOOOOO, say it ain't so! Sadly as I slip towards my 70's, all good things generally come to an end. Being from the great flat boring state of Louisiana, I fully appreciate the road situation, Fortunately, Utah has reinvigorated driving fine old cars. You have been a GREAT credit to this forum Steve, expect that will continue.

Thanks Fred, it was great having you drive it!

having seen Steve's car on multiple occasions and having known him since the beginning of my coupe voyage, i'm not stretching anything to say this is one of the best potential coupes around with sympathetic upgrades ... and you would be following coupe royalty in the car's lineage. this is a coupe worth buying + owning for the long haul.

i am also an original Louisiana native having grown up in the bayou country and school in NOLA. just like Steve, i no longer live there. there are plenty of good roads further north in LA, but you have to get north of I-10 / I-12 ... otherwise the highest elevation is a levee or a bridge over one of the many rivers.
