We just got back last night from a great weekend at the Sonoma Historics. What a great event! There were close to 400 cars in attendance, split into 15 groups ranging from a 1911 National, up to 1980's sports racers. The group of old NASCAR cars was a treat. Definitely put this event on your bucket list!
The Jagermobile ran in group 12- 1973-1979 IMSA GT & 1964-1970 FIA cars. We had 23 cars in our group including 2 910 Porsches, an 8 liter Corvette, a Datsun 240Z with a big motor, a pair of Chevron B-8s, and an assortment of single, twin, and non-turbo Porsches. There were also 3 CSLs- Henry Schmidtt's IMSA car, Gianluca Rattazzi's very early Group 2 car, and the Jagermobile.
It was only my second time to run Sonoma, which is a very technical track. I spent Thursday and Friday practice sessions trying to re-learn the course. I had great help and advice from Bill Watson who's shop, Road Rockets, is located outside turn 10. He was there to tend to Henry's CSL. Unfortunately Henry blew a motor big time on Friday and sat out the rest of the weekend. Gianluca also had to retire from the race with a shifter problem.
For Sunday's race I was gridded 9th. I got a great start and passed one of the 910's and the GT 40 going into turn 2. I was also able to get by the 934 going into turn 11 on the second lap. The lead Corvette spun in turn 1, and the Datsun retired, so that left me in 4th. I remained there for several laps until the Ford and the 934 came back to life and got by me.
Unfortunately the fuel feed problem we have been troubled with reared its head a few laps later and one of the 910's motored around me so I finished 7th on the day.
All in all I am really pleased with how the car performed. We still need to sort the fuel problem, but otherwise the car is a rocket. It pulls very hard out of the corners, it handles unbelievably well, the brakes are great, and it is fun to drive.
I got some great video from the weekend which I will be editing this week and posting to YouTube. I will update this thread when that is up.
Next race will be Portland in early July. Between now and then we need to put mufflers on the car since Portland has noise limits. We will also continue to diagnose the fuel issue.
